Editor's Notes

  • #2 Libraries and Museums make natural partners for contributing content to the MMP.
  • #3 Libraries and Museum share very similar missions. We believe in collection content and providing access to content to entertain and to enrich peoples lives.
  • #4 This is also the mission of the MMP. It makes sense that we work together to this end.
  • #5 The MMP accepts content from libraries, museums, and archives. The contributing organization is responsible for getting collection content digitized and creating metadata. The digital copy with the metadata is then uploaded to the MMP. I will walk employees and volunteers through the process from start to finish.
  • #6 Libraries can bring to the table several resources including employees and volunteers. Most libraries pay membership fees to OCLC group services contract. This contract includes the CONTENTdm platform that makes the MMP webpages possible. Library staff members are familiar with basic cataloging and metadata principals. Libraries often have content in their collections that lend themselves to digital collecitons.
  • #7 Museums also have employees and volunteers. In smaller communities, they are often the keepers of the historical content and have great materials for collections. The staff and volunteers have great knowledge about the community’s historical items. Museums have regular content donors, providing new content for display. Many museums keep track of their items with an inventory software like PastPerfect. This information is also a form of metadata and can be used to create metadata files. Museums often are only open for a few months a year – Memorial day to Labor day, so their volunteers may have some free time each year.
  • #8 Library and museum partneships can create an opportunity to share the workload.
  • #9 Much of the content that makes an excellent digital collection is hidden away in museums and libraries. The content is stored in files cabinets, binders, cupboards or boxes. Putting the collection on the MMP makes the content available to all.
