3. Importance
of Pronouns
• Misgendering and "mispronouning" – utilizing pronouns that do not
accurately reflect a person’s gender identity and/or expression
• For instance, inferring one’s pronouns based upon their legal name
• i.e. Automatically representing William with he/him or Mary
with she/her
• Historical context is not sufficient evidence for assumption
of one’s pronouns
• One’s gender identity/expression may differ from the
historical context of their name or physical
appearance
• 65-70% of trans individuals surveyed nationally noted having been
misgendered at least once
• Misgendering often led to feelings of:
• Distress
• Anxiety
• Depression
3
4. The "Why and How"
• Use of pronouns helps us:
• Avoid making assumptions about someone's gender
• Make the unconscious conscious for all of us!
• Written communication is full of opportunities to utilize pronouns
• Let’s make them opportunities of empowerment!
• Pronoun settings are not available on every platform utilized by UNH
• Pronouns do not automatically populate in any platform utilized by UNH
Virtually sharing our pronouns is a great way to foster inclusion;
across campus & beyond! 4
