This document defines and describes several key terms related to the LGBT community:
- LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It is used to represent the community.
- Lesbian refers to homosexual women. Gay primarily refers to homosexual people. Bisexual refers to romantic or sexual attraction to both males and females. Transgender refers to people whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth.
- The document discusses discrimination faced by the LGBT community and its impacts, including higher rates of mental health issues. While LGBT people can live happy lives, discrimination adds additional risks.
2. LGBT
Is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender. In use since the
1990s, the term is an adaptation of the
initialism LGB, which was used to replace the
term gay in reference the LGBT community
beginning in the mid-to-late 1980s. Activist
believed that the term gay community did not
accurately represent all those to whom it
referred.
3. LESBIAN
Lesbian is a homosexual woman. The word lesbian
is also used for women in relation to their sexual
identity or sexual behavior regardless of sexual
orientation, or as an adjective to characterize or
associate nouns with female homosexuality or same
sex attraction.
4. GAY
Is a term that primarily refers to a
homosexual person or the trait of
being homosexual. The term was
originally used to mean
‘‘carefree’’, or ‘‘bright and
showy’’.
5. BISEXUAL
BISEXUALITY IS A ROMANTIC
ATTRACTION, SEXUAL
ATTRACTION, OR SEXUAL
BEHAVIOR TOWARDS BOTH
MALES AND FEMALES, OR TO
MORE THAN ONE SEX OR
GENDER.
6. TRANSGENDER
People have a gender identity or
gender expression that differs
form their assigned sex. Some
transgender people identify as
transsexual if there desire
medical assistance to transition
from one sex to another.
7. IMPORTANCE OF LGBT
1.There is a lot of misunderstanding. People think that it is a
choice (it’s not). People think all gay men want to be women
(no, only transgender do). People think that being LGBT is
“contagious” (no, it’s just something inborn). People do not fully
understand what it is to be transgender.
2. LGBT people undergo a lot of discrimination, especially those
who do not appear “normal”. Many societies look down on
LGBT and even many that don’t do not allow marriage, denying
them the right to be with the one they love.
8. IMPACT OF DISCRIMINATION TO LGBT
1. Experiences with discrimination and stigmatization can
lead to a higher likelihood of emotional distress,
depression and anxiety.
2. People can often feel pressured to fit in with society’s
conventional ideas of being male or female.
3. People still experience discrimination, harassment and
violence at work, school, and in social situations.
9. FACTORS AFFECTING LGBT
1.People lead happy, healthy, fulfilling lives. However, studies
have found that non-heterosexual people face up to twice as
much abuse or violence ( including physical, mental, sexual or
emotional) than their heterosexual counterparts. The prejudice
and discrimination adds an additional layer of risk on top of
biological, social, environmental and psychological factors
which can lead to depression, anxiety and suicide.
10. UNSEEN HARMS
(LGBT)
1.David M. – a gay man, works at a fortune 500
company with a formal, written nondiscrimination
policy. “ I couldn’t be fired for being gay,” he said. But
David went on to explain, “ when partners at the firm
invite straight men to squash or drinks, they don’t invite
the women or gay men. I’m being passed over for
opportunities that could lead to being promoted.”
