Taylor Boles wrote a letter to the judges of her senior project at Creekview High School. She is pursuing a degree in Secondary Education in Mathematics at North Georgia College to become a high school math teacher. For her senior project, she created a lesson plan and taught a class for a freshman algebra course, videotaping her teaching. Her research paper focused on the shortage of math teachers, which relates directly to her career goal. Through completing her senior project, she learned that teaching is the right career path for her, though she felt it required too much time that could have been spent studying for AP exams.

Dear Judges:
My name is Taylor Boles, and I am a senior at Creekview High School. Next year, I will be
attending North Georgia College and State University. My goal is to become a high school math
teacher. My education goals consist of getting my Master’s Degree after teaching for two years. I
chose teaching a freshman math class as my senior project because I felt it would give me a feel
for the career field. I also thought that teaching a math class would prepare me for my future job.
My product for my senior project is a lesson plan for one day and one lesson for a GPS Algebra
Math class, which is a freshman math class. I also set up a video camera, so I could video myself
teaching the math class.I researched the shortage of math teachers. The issue is connected to my
product because once people start to teach the class, they decide it is not the job for them. When
people decide not to become math teachers a shortage occurs. When researching the shortage of
math teachers, I found that the field is an appealing field because schools need teachers and are
trying to find as many math teachers as possible. I encountered multiple obstacles when creating
my product. When I was creating my product, I created a lesson on the wrong topic and had to
start over. I also faced technology issues, which were resolved by getting help from the Media
Specialist at Creekview.
My research paper is related to my career because I want to become a high school math teacher.
Since my paper was on the shortage of math teachers, it strongly relates to my career because I
will be becoming a teacher which helps reduce the shortage. Through doing my senior project I
have learned that teaching is the career for me. I enjoyed teaching math. I also learned I am good
at listening to instructions. I am planning on majoring in Secondary Education in Mathematics,
also known as Secondary Math Certification. I will need this certification in order to become a
high school math teacher.
I think the senior project is worthwhile for helping people figure out what career they would like
to pursue. However, I also think it is slightly a waste of time because people do not really take it
seriously. It is also to much work because people have AP courses to focus on and all the
requirements take a lot of time out of their study time for the AP exams. Thank you for the time
