EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY

18 January 2011
Dear Sir/Madam;
Jeremiah Dow has requested that I write a letter of support for his application for a position at your firm.
My considered judgment is that Jeremiah is an exceptional young man and an excellent candidate for the position
you seek to fill.
Jeremiah graduated from Eastem Oregon University a major in Philosophy, Politics & Economics. Our
PPE program is an interdisciplinary program that combines the analytical rigor of the social sciences with enduring
normative questions in philosophy to promote an integrative and critical understanding of the institutions, practices,
and policies that shape the contemporary world. Because of its interdisciplinary focus, we believe our
undergraduate program is an excellent foundation for positions in various fields, in particular law.
I had the pleasure of having Jeremiah in a number of my economics courses and I can say without
equivocation that he was one of my top students. He has an inquisitive and analytical mind, excellent
communication skills, and a thoughtful and compassionate personality. Jeremiah's academic skills go beyond
simply doing the work necessary for an "An in the course. He was always prepared in class and concerned and
interested in learning and understanding the concepts and material in the course.
Because of his performance in our economics courses, Jeremiah was asked to be an undergraduate teaching
assistant for both the Principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, a rather rare occurrence. Fortunately for
the Econ faculty, he was interested and proved invaluable. It takes confidence, responsibility and hard-work to
undertake such a task. You need to understand the material well-enough that you can stand up in front of a group of
your peers and explain often difficult and abstract material. You also need to be a leader and role model in your
own study habits and personal goals. Students learn a lot about how to be a good student from other students, and
Jeremiah provided a great model for them to follow.
As a student at Eastern, Jeremiah also undertook an ambitious research project on grade inflation in the
academy. His organizational and research skills, his writing ability, and his thorouglmess and dedication to the
project were impressive. Jeremiah brings that level of hard work, focus, and meticulous attention to detail to
everything he does.
I have no doubt that you will have many extremely qualified applicants for your position and that your task
is daunting. I would strong encourage you to give serious consideration to an extremely deserving and well
qualified young man, Jeremiah Dow. I can say without reservation, he will excel in your position and he will be a
credit to your firm and work.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
