Dear Editor,
You may have heard about the new fraternity on campus, Sigma Tau Gamma. We
founded the organization over the summer and fall term, and we are currently recruiting to start a
colony (as of now we are a nationally recognized interest group). Our ultimate goal is not to be
another underground fraternity, but to be officially recognized by the university.
We want to start a new tradition of brotherhood and culture at the University. In the
pursuit of this goal we have been speaking to our national Chief Executive Officer, Steve Latour,
to allow Sigma Tau Gamma be founded at schools in South Carolina, starting with Coastal
Carolina University. The commitment to academics and brotherhood that is gained from being
part of Sigma Tau Gamma is unmatched in other student-run organizations.
While Greek life is not for everyone, we all feel we have more to offer than just being
friends, but brotherhood. We have all talked with the fraternities currently recognized on campus
and do not feel their philosophies do not match as well as those of Sigma Tau Gamma. It is time
for Coastal Carolina University to embrace Greek Life and allow its students to grow and to
reach their full potential by welcoming Sigma Tau Gamma to campus.
As a whole group, the members have explored Greek life at CCU, and during this
exploration we have not been able to find a Greek organization that is right for us. With that
being said, coming together as a group and after doing independent research, Sigma Tau Gamma
is the Greek organization for us. We believe that establishing this organization will give students
like us a Greek organization to affiliate with. Sigma Tau Gamma embodies six principles that
we all feel are crucial to becoming valuable members to society and to improve this university.
I. The Principle of Value
a. To enhance the worth of belonging
II. The Principle of Learning
a. To afford the environment for learning
III. The Principle of Leadership
a. To develop good leaders for America
IV. The Principle of Excellence
a. To strive for superior performance
V. The Principle of Benefit
a. To serve Fraternity, college, country
VI. The Principle of Integrity
a. To perfect a structure of honor
With Current founders and new potential members personifying these principles each
day, we will make a positive impact on the Greek community and the University as a whole.
