Teaching Experience process
Student Teacher: West Deptford Middle School; Grade 6 Social Studies, West Deptford NJ; Spring 2015
I worked closely with my cooperating teacher and our grade-level partner to create student engaging lessons. My
cooperating teacher and I used a team teaching approach and I also instructed the class independently. I attended
faculty meetings where I learned techniques for incorporating accommodations and modifications. I also received
firsthand experience in dealing with parents by attending parent-teacher conferences.
Once a month WDMS has a half day dedicated to character development. I volunteered to create one of these
lessons because it presented a perfect opportunity to talk about empathy. The connection I wanted my students to
come away with was how empathy hones our ability to understand different perspectives, a skill helpful both in our
lives today and in our study of social studies. Going into the lesson I was worried it was going to be a difficult
concept for my students to grasp, but in the end I received some really intriguing feedback.
By far the most rewarding part of my experience was getting to know the remarkable students at WDMS.
