Abstract
We read and study about American History, The Declaration of Independents, The Constitution of The United States of America, but have you ever been curious where the writers of these documents discovered the ideas and principles that set the standards for such documents. The truth is many philosophers are responsible for the basic frame work of the most celebrated, studied, and referenced documents our government has ever produced. I am going to discuss three of the philosophers in the following paper. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau, their beliefs in social contracts and human nature have served as framework for many areas in our American History.
Politics and Social Contracts.
Understanding morality, human nature, and social contracts will help you understand the framework for many of today’s political decisions as they have built upon each other throughout history. First let’s look at our roles as citizens according to Hobbes, Loucke and Rousseau.
Hobbes believed that humans were unconstrained by laws or social agreements were living in a state of nature, selfish, destructive, and unprincipled. Without social contracts human lives would be nasty and very unpleasant. Loucke was a bit more optimistic regarding human nature, that humans being rational creatures were governed by natural laws and entitled to certain inalienable rights, known as life, liberty, health and property. That humans will come together to ensure their natural rights. Rousseau was more focused on human compassion, all humans are naturally compassionate. Look at these beliefs, and then think about society today, do you know someone that truly represents each one of these beliefs regarding human nature? Possibly even look back though your own life and the stages of growth you have experienced, I know at various times in my life I could have very fittingly been described by each of these descriptions of human nature.
Social contracts are believed to be essential, in order for humans to thrive and prosper by all of the philosophers, yet each of them had a slightly different view of how the social contracts affected society. Hobbes believed that social contracts were necessary to allow humans to coexist successfully in society. That humans would recognize the need and enter into the social contract willfully in order to enhance our own lives. Social contracts were necessary in order to establish justice and laws. Loucke believed that humans would find it to our advantage to come together, form a political state to maintain and ensure our natural rights. Throughout the years our natural rights are more commonly referred to as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Rousseau focused on human compassion to include empathy and sympathy for fellow members of our society. Our human co.

Social Contract theorists say that morality consists of a set of rules governing how people should treat one another that rational beings will agree to accept for their mutual benefit, on the condition that others agree to follow these rules as well.
Hobbes
runs the logic like this in the form of a logical syllogism:
1) We are all self-interested,
2) Each of us needs to have a peaceful and cooperative social order to pursue our interests,
3) We need moral rules in order to establish and maintain a cooperative social order,
Therefore, self-interest motivates us to establish moral rules.
Thomas Hobbes
looked to the past to observe a primitive “State of Nature” in which there is no such thing as morality, and that this self-interested human nature was "nasty, brutish, and short" -- a kind of perpetual state of warfare
John Locke
disagreed, and set forth the view that the state exists to preserve the natural rights of its citizens. When governments fail in that task, citizens have the right—and sometimes the duty—to withdraw their support and even to rebel.

Locke addressed Hobbes's claim that the state of nature was the state of war, though he attribute this claim to "some men" not to Hobbes. He refuted it by pointing to existing and real historical examples of people in a state of nature. For this purpose he regarded any people who are not subject to a common judge to resolve disputes, people who may legitimately take action to themselves punish wrong doers, as in a state of nature.

John Locke
John Locke was an English philosopher born in 1632. He was educated at Westminster School and Oxford, where he studied medicine. Locke became personal physician to Anthony Ashley Cooper, the Earl of Shaftesbury, in 1667. Locke published several influential works, including An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which outlined his empiricist theory of knowledge, and Two Treatises of Government, which influenced political thought. Locke argued that governments should protect natural rights and respect religious toleration. He spent his later years in Essex, dying in 1704.

Of Man Part One of Leviathan is devoted to explaining human nature, since it natural man that makes up the matter of the state (see Introduction, paragraph 2). Hobbes is quite impressed with science and he himself worked on the physics of optics before he turned his attention to civil law & political authority in Leviathan. Hobbes is a 'mechanist'—that is, he thinks life is nothing more than matter and motion, and all facts about humans (and the natural world) can be expressed in terms of matter and motion (see the Introduction, paragraph 1).

Social contract theorists say that morality consists of a set of rules governing how people should treat one another that rational beings will agree to accept for their mutual benefit, on the condition that others agree to follow these rules as well.
Hobbes runs the logic like this in the form of a logical syllogism:
1. We are all self-interested.
2. Each of us needs to have a peaceful and cooperative social order to pursue our interests.
3. We need moral rules in order to establish and maintain a cooperative social order.
4. Therefore, self-interest motivates us to establish moral rules.
Hobbes looked to the past to observe a primitive “State of Nature” in which there is no such thing as morality, and that this self-interested human nature was "nasty, brutish, and short" – a kind of perpetual state of warfare.
Locke disagreed, and set forth the view that the state exists to preserve the natural rights of its citizens. When governments fail in that task, citizens have the right – and sometimes the duty – to withdraw their support and even to rebel. Locke addressed Hobbes's claim that the state of nature was the state of war, though he attribute this claim to "some men" not to Hobbes. He refuted it by pointing to existing and real historical examples of people in a state of nature. For this purpose he regarded any people who are not subject to a common judge to resolve disputes, people who may legitimately take action themselves to punish wrong doers, as in a state of nature.

Abstract
We read and study about American History, The Declaration of Independents, The Constitution of The United States of America, but have you ever been curious where the writers of these documents discovered the ideas and principles that set the standards for such documents. The truth is many philosophers are responsible for the basic frame work of the most celebrated, studied, and referenced documents our government has ever produced. I am going to discuss three of the philosophers in the following paper. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau, their beliefs in social contracts and human nature have served as framework for many areas in our American History.
Politics and Social Contracts.
Understanding morality, human nature, and social contracts will help you understand the framework for many of today’s political decisions as they have built upon each other throughout history. First let’s look at our roles as citizens according to Hobbes, Loucke and Rousseau.
Hobbes believed that humans were unconstrained by laws or social agreements were living in a state of nature, selfish, destructive, and unprincipled. Without social contracts human lives would be nasty and very unpleasant. Loucke was a bit more optimistic regarding human nature, that humans being rational creatures were governed by natural laws and entitled to certain inalienable rights, known as life, liberty, health and property. That humans will come together to ensure their natural rights. Rousseau was more focused on human compassion, all humans are naturally compassionate. Look at these beliefs, and then think about society today, do you know someone that truly represents each one of these beliefs regarding human nature? Possibly even look back though your own life and the stages of growth you have experienced, I know at various times in my life I could have very fittingly been described by each of these descriptions of human nature.
Social contracts are believed to be essential, in order for humans to thrive and prosper by all of the philosophers, yet each of them had a slightly different view of how the social contracts affected society. Hobbes believed that social contracts were necessary to allow humans to coexist successfully in society. That humans would recognize the need and enter into the social contract willfully in order to enhance our own lives. Social contracts were necessary in order to establish justice and laws. Loucke believed that humans would find it to our advantage to come together, form a political state to maintain and ensure our natural rights. Throughout the years our natural rights are more commonly referred to as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Rousseau focused on human compassion to include empathy and sympathy for fellow members of our society. Our human co.

John Locke was an English philosopher born in 1632. He was educated at Westminster School and Oxford, where he studied medicine. Locke became personal physician to Anthony Ashley Cooper, the Earl of Shaftesbury, in 1667. Locke published several influential works, including An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which outlined his empiricist theory of knowledge, and Two Treatises of Government, which influenced political thought. Locke argued that governments should protect natural rights and respect religious toleration. He spent his later years in Essex, dying in 1704.

PART ONE:
Of Man Part One of Leviathan is devoted to explaining human nature, since it natural man that makes up the matter of the state (see Introduction, paragraph 2). Hobbes is quite impressed with science and he himself worked on the physics of optics before he turned his attention to civil law & political authority in Leviathan. Hobbes is a 'mechanist'—that is, he thinks life is nothing more than matter and motion, and all facts about humans (and the natural world) can be expressed in terms of matter and motion (see the Introduction, paragraph 1).

1. Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, certain criteria should be looked at or met to consider something art. The same applies to calling someone an artist. Getlein first discusses that artists create places that fulfill a purpose for humans. Examples of this include Stonehenge and the Vietnam Memorial. Artists also exaggerate or give new perspective on ordinary objects to make them seem extraordinary. Another thing artists accomplish is using their art to record history. Their art could remind people of a different time or era in human history. For example, a painting for an ancient Chinese dynasty gives us insight into that era. 2. Unity is when pieces come together in art to form a cohesive whole. Variety is the difference in these pieces to be more interesting. An example of these concepts is figure 3.8 on page 56. Guernica by Pablo Picasso is a painting of disfigured animals and people that seem chaotic. Different images can be seen throughout the painting. Unity is shown because all the individual objects and people come together to give you a large picture. Variety is also shown because many of the animals like the horse are disfigured and almost cartoonish. We will be working on this paper for the next three units. The final draft of the paper--with all three sections described below--will be due at the end of Unit #4.
Purpose:
This paper assignment has several purposes. As the first major paper for this class, the Point of View Essay is designed to re-engage you with the fundamentals of all good writing, including using lush sensory details to show the reader a particular place (rather than tell them about it), basic organization, clear focus, etc. However, this unit does not function as a mere review. The Point of View Essay will also introduce you to the concept of "thinking and seeing rhetorically, and analyzing writing rhetorically"--using the Writer's Toolbox described in this unit to improve your writing and critical reading skills. Finally, the Point of View Essay allows you to reflect on this process.
The Assignment:
1. Pleasant/Unpleasant Description of the Place:
Choose a place you can observe for an extended period of time (at least 20-30 minutes). Use all of your senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, even taste if possible) to experience the place, and record all of the sensations that you experience. As you record your data, you may wish to note which details naturally seem more positive, negative, or neutral, in terms of tone. (For instance, a stinky and overflowing trash barrel swarming with flies in a nearby alley might seem more inherently negative than a little white bunny rabbit hopping playfully across the lawn.) Then, you will use this information to help your write two descriptions of the place: one positive, one negative (at least 1-2 well-developed paragraphs or a minimum of 125-150 words each). Both descriptions should be factually true (same real time and real place), but you will want one description to be clearly positive in terms of tone and the other to be clearly negative. A positive influence from the media would be a commercial or show/clip about stopping bullying that informs people about the topic and why bullying is wrong and how it affects the lives of the victims. This type of media would influence society in a positive way because it would actually get society thinking about the situation and for the bullies some of them will actually realize the harm they are causing there victims and they would probably stop bullying people. A negative influence of the media would be a song with someone talking about how they murder people and take drugs and make it in a way to make people think it’s “cool” and then people who listen to it start imitating the things talked about in the song because they want to be “cool”. What I hope to accomplish with this essay is to open people eyes and help them see that the things they watch and listen to as in media actually alter the way they think and the choices they make so hopefully they change what they listen to and watch to more positive things.
