Lesson Title: Modems & Routers: How they work together.
Introduction: (Short description to introduce the lesson.)
This lesson is designed to teach students about networking hardware. The students will
learn about modems and routers and how they work together.
*Note: This lesson is based on the knowledge that students have already covered an
introduction to networks and understand basic information of networks.
Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Student(s): 9th Grade Students
Objectives: (What will the student(s) know or be able to do after completing the lesson?)
The students will be able to identify & define basic networking terms.
The students will be able to understand how a modem and router works.
The students will be able to identify what a modem looks like, along with what a router
looks like.
The students will be able to work collaboratively to research and discuss how modems &
routers have changed over the years.
The students will be able to explain why these two networking hardwares are important to a
computer, or network in general.
Standards Addressed: (What content area standards will be addressed in this lesson? This
may not apply in the Networking lesson.)
Timeline: (How much time will be required to complete the lesson?)
The students will be given the full class-time to complete this lesson. (120 minutes)
Opening Activity- 10 minutes
Lesson- no more than 30 minutes
Timeline Activity-60/70 minutes
Kahoot! Exit Game- remainder of class.
Materials: (List or describe the materials to be used in the lesson. Attach copies of
handouts or files that will be used to complete the lesson.)
Opening Activity Worksheet (to be handed out by the teacher).
School tablet to follow along to the powerpoint lesson, research for timeline activity, and
play Kahoot! Game.
2. Grouping Strategies: (If time at a computer is involved, how many computers will you
have available and how will you group your student(s)?)
Students will have their own tablets given out by their school to help assist with
assignments. If not, then the students will pair up with a person in their group that has their
tablet.
Learning Activities: (Describe the tasks to be completed by the student(s))
-Opening Activity: Best Guess
Students will work collaboratively to fill in key terms used in networking.
-Lesson: Short Powerpoint covering Modems & Routers
-Timeline Activity: Students will work together to research and discuss how modems and
routers have changed over the years. When the allotted time is up, the groups will work
together as a class to come up with a timeline on the information they have discovered.
Diversity: (How will you modify the activities to address learners with special needs?)
Give them more time.
Pre-filled notes.
Images on notes if needed to further assist them.
Assessment: (Explain how the learning objectives will be assessed. This might be a quiz,
test, or project based assessment, for example. The assessment does not need to be
attached. Just explain your assessment plan.)
To assess learning, the students will play a Kahoot! game where their knowledge will be
tested and recorded for grading.
The timeline activity will also be documented by the teacher and groups will receive a grade
based on the information they present and the participation involved.
