                                          Unit : Map Skills
AIM : To familiarise ourselves with the skills needed to read an OS map.
      To start on our Sheffield FC enquiry.

OBJECTIVES                 By the end of the lesson(s)
Pupils will know: How to complete 4 and 6 figure grid references. How heights are shown on a
map
Pupils will understand: That land use is determined by the physical features of the landscape

Pupils can do: 4 & 6 fig grid references. Complete an activity on map of Sheffield.

15 x OS 1:25000 Map of Sheffield
Boardworks
Foundations Textbook
Any additional Sheets that teacher wishes to use.
15 x Sheffield FC task sheet
15 x Three fill in sheets.
LESSON STRUCTURE
* Introduce topic vocabulary and concept(s)
* Introduce maps. Reminder of skills acquired in Y7. Students need to bring in maps next
week
* Reminder of how to do 4 fig then 6 fig grid references (KS3 Boardworks is good) May want
to use Humanities Teachers Grid Ref Game for IAWB. See MP for copy
* How is relief shown on a map? Introduce contours and spot heights. See key for symbols.
* Hand out ‘Out and About in Sheffield’. Students to work their way through the activities
and answer in their blue books. NOTE: ONLY THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE MAP IS NEEDED
FOR THIS TASK (SOUTH SHEFFIELD) – Space saving!!!!
* Introduction of the task – Hand out ‘Sheffield FC Leisure Complex’ background sheet.
* Read through the information with the class. Explain the categories in the table, especially
the description of location section. Could mention cost here as well - increased land values
closer to the CBD etc. Students to work in pairs on this task.
* Grid references for the three sites are as follows: Location 1 -Works off Abbeydale Road
345845. 2. Norfolk Park 367859. 3. Grange Farm/The Oaks 367822
* Class to start filling three tables. One for each location.

HOMEWORK
For presentation next week, students could bring in pictures of their football team (11) and of
the new stadium for inclusion on the piece of work. Use google images to print off pictures to
bring into class next week. Could then use work for presentation.
