#11 Have you ever listen to these classics and contemporary songs?
Well, I am very sure if not all of them but most of these songs are very familiar to you and I think you have been jamming into this songs up until now because they are considered iconic and massive hits during their time and I think up until now most these songs are played in loudspeakers, in radio or in busses and jeepneys or you often hear this in Videoke and also you often hear this every Sunday.
#12 So, they are pretty much popular because of their lyrics, or the meaningful lyrics this songs had presented in media which many of you related to it.
#13 But has it crosses your mind What do you think influenced the composers in writing the lyrics?
#14 Or pertaining to Literature I know most of you have reading lot of stories and literary pieces which are relatable and have you ever thought of what are the influence or what actually the inspirations in creating such a relatable stories and literature?
So our lesson we are going to talk about or going to appreciate more the literary texts and songs and we are going to identify what inspired the writers into creating them, so what are we waiting for, let’s start the lesson.
#16 So, before we get into our main topic of our lesson today , let us have first a little bit of trivia.
I know of all you of course know this particular novel written by our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal which entitled, “Noli Me Tangere”.
You have read and studies this novel when you were I your Junior High School and of course this novel presented the lives of the early Filipinos during the Spanish colonization period.
#17 So, as a trivia it was actually influence by an American novel written by Harriet Beecher-Stowe, who happen to be read by our National hero when he was studying abroad. This novel was entitled, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, so this novel basically discuss the lives of African-Americans as slaves in the United States before. So after reading this novel, Rizal became very inspired. Rizal was influenced by it’s technique written by Stowe and that’s become the birth of Noli Me Tangere. So technically speaking Noli Me Tangere talks about the lives of the early Filipinos in the hands of Spanish friars and how the Philippine government was controlled during the Spanish period.
#18 So, aside from this foreign novel that influence Noli Me Tangere so the lives of early Filipinos before or the experiences of the early Filipinos also inspired Dr. Jose Rizal in writing the novel.
So definitely the Historical events and Current state of the country during those times are the ultimate inspirations that contribute to the creation and the beauty of the novel. And that’s when we are going to talk about “LITERARY CONTEXT”.
#20 Context in it’s simplest definition in Literature refers to the BACKGROUND. The background information that’s surrounds the text itself.
It also involves the following information, first is the “ENVIRONMENT SETTING”, second is the “SURROUNDING OF EVENTS” and lastly, the “OCCURENCES” that happen or that occur outside of the text.
#21 Now, from simply understanding the text after reading it, we are going to the CONTEXT.
So when you say Context, you are now “GETTING OUT OF THE TEXT ITSELF”, which leads to “DEEPER UNDERSTANDING” and “APPRECIATION OF THE TEXT”.
#22 The PURPOSE of identifying the CONTEXT of a literary work is ………
#24 Before we’re going to the definition of Writer’s context, let’s have first a question answerable by yes or no within yourself.
#25 Definitely the answer is YES, just like Dr. Jose Rizal did in his written novels as well as other authors and writers of different literary works.
#29 If earlier we are going to identify the life of the writer which falls under the Writer’s context, in the Reader’s context we are now getting away in the writer’s life but now we are going to focus on the reader himself/herself.
#30 Basically these involves the previous literary texts that you’ve read and how you are going to relate it to the present text that you are currently read and at the same time you are going to attached your own experiences, your own feelings and emotions and how do this experiences relate to the text you are reading.
#33 Here, you are now identify the background information’s of the company or the publishing company that printed the text.
#34 So in these category of context we are going to take note the following factors, first is we are going to identify the society of the characters in the text and also, the society or the kind of society that the author of the text live in WHEN THE TEXT PRODUCED.
#36 Now that you have already realized or that you have already learned the importance or the significance of literary context in understanding and appreciating more a literary text. Now its your time to conduct your own investigation or your own research of these different literary songs.
#40 Basically these involves the previous literary texts that you’ve read and how you are going to relate it to the present text that you are currently read and at the same time you are going to attached your own experiences, your own feelings and emotions and how do this experiences relate to the text you are reading.
