Lesson 3: Civic
Consciousness
GETTING READY!
We have a responsibility to help in developing the
community where we live. For its part, a community is
there to help us succeed depending on the goal of that
particular community. There are different types of
community according to purpose. A school community is
mainly committed to learning. A residential community
may be more focused on the safety of the people. A
spiritual community may be more concerned about growth
in faith of its people. Whatever the goal of the community
is, it is the members help it succeed.
The people in any type of community share a common value that
they demonstrate in making the community successful. This value is
known civic consciousness. Civic consciousness is a value that makes
people aware that community effort means that the people in a
community work together for the common good. The whole idea of
community will surely fail if the people in a community suddenly
decide to think only of themselves and forgot about the well-being of
everyone in the community.
LEARNING WHAT IS
GOOD!
Civic minded people are those who
provided direct or indirect service for the
benefits of the community members by
sharing their skills and time with them.
Civic-mindedness means being
involved in activities of he local
community or neighborhood associations
whether for profit or not. Community
work is done for the sake of development
and improvement of the whole
community.
It does not matter if the work done is
big or small. Every contribution given
by each member is deemed
important. The famous Bayanihan
painting of Fernando Amorsolo
depicts true concern and
cooperation. Each person in the
painting contributes to accomplish a
common goal. The painting
symbolizes the spirit of being one
with our community for the common
good.
The spirit of bayanihan or civic-consciousness will remain alive as long as
everyone in the community genuinely cares for each other. To help remember
this, let us think of the benefits of participating in community efforts to raise the
quality of living in our communities. Let us also help raise awareness of the
community issues that need our attention to encourage everyone in our
community to take part in the efforts as well.
