Lesson #13:Reading & Studying for Tests Step #6
Reviewing Information Effective method for test prep Continually looking over info to put in long term memory Organized, scheduled, conscientious going over text lessons & notes.   Critical for the serious student
Understand Major ideas & connections to other ideas Need to focus majority of time on important points & parts you understand least To set up a review time with a plan of items to study Notes taken in class & from text
Organize Notes, handouts, graded tests & quizzes Created vocabulary terms & definitions Know what the tests/quizzes/finals will cover Keep them together using a “system
Time Review the day you get material or info to go over. Keep it “fresh.” Evaluate how much you already know Evaluate how much time is needed to intro new knowledge & the importance of that new info Will be your biggest enemy if not managed  “Lost time is never found again!”
Question-& Answer Review Make up your own Imagine what your teacher would ask Convert headings, bolded, or italicized words into questions You can very well predict over half test questions Choose important info & make relevant questions
Textbook Questions Best source of questions to prepare Check your textbook to verify answers
Teacher Preference Know the history of teacher tests After the 2nd or 3rd test, you should see a pattern for most teachers “Insight” can be your friend Imitate the questions modeled by your teachers
Selective Review Chooses between important & unimportant Redundant review makes you a “dunce” Choose new & unfamiliar material Makes you an “effective” student & makes the most of your study time “Chunk” information, make it relative
Reviews Repeat over & over Extensive documentation (outlining, Cornell notes, etc.) of information Systematically create a method that works for you
Helpful Review Habits Organize notes in folders or notebook Go over class notes – reread and understand Use marking system (Highlighters, colored pens, Post-It Notes, etc.) Change info into questions to study Know vocab words & define
More Helpful Review Habits Repeat & memorize important information Make note of bolded, italicized, chapter questions, topic sentences, summaries, & chapter review questions Study previous tests/quizzes Schedule multiple study times

Lesson 13 Rdg & Stdying For Tests

  • 1. Lesson #13:Reading & Studying for Tests Step #6
  • 2. Reviewing Information Effective method for test prep Continually looking over info to put in long term memory Organized, scheduled, conscientious going over text lessons & notes. Critical for the serious student
  • 3. Understand Major ideas & connections to other ideas Need to focus majority of time on important points & parts you understand least To set up a review time with a plan of items to study Notes taken in class & from text
  • 4. Organize Notes, handouts, graded tests & quizzes Created vocabulary terms & definitions Know what the tests/quizzes/finals will cover Keep them together using a “system
  • 5. Time Review the day you get material or info to go over. Keep it “fresh.” Evaluate how much you already know Evaluate how much time is needed to intro new knowledge & the importance of that new info Will be your biggest enemy if not managed “Lost time is never found again!”
  • 6. Question-& Answer Review Make up your own Imagine what your teacher would ask Convert headings, bolded, or italicized words into questions You can very well predict over half test questions Choose important info & make relevant questions
  • 7. Textbook Questions Best source of questions to prepare Check your textbook to verify answers
  • 8. Teacher Preference Know the history of teacher tests After the 2nd or 3rd test, you should see a pattern for most teachers “Insight” can be your friend Imitate the questions modeled by your teachers
  • 9. Selective Review Chooses between important & unimportant Redundant review makes you a “dunce” Choose new & unfamiliar material Makes you an “effective” student & makes the most of your study time “Chunk” information, make it relative
  • 10. Reviews Repeat over & over Extensive documentation (outlining, Cornell notes, etc.) of information Systematically create a method that works for you
  • 11. Helpful Review Habits Organize notes in folders or notebook Go over class notes – reread and understand Use marking system (Highlighters, colored pens, Post-It Notes, etc.) Change info into questions to study Know vocab words & define
  • 12. More Helpful Review Habits Repeat & memorize important information Make note of bolded, italicized, chapter questions, topic sentences, summaries, & chapter review questions Study previous tests/quizzes Schedule multiple study times
