4. Fun Facts about Chinese Language:
• Mandarin Chinese, the most common Chinese dialect, is
the most widely spoken language in the world
• Chinese writing has over 50,000 characters
• The Chinese Languages are tonal languages. Mandarin has
four basic tones and then a fifth neutral tone.
• Chinese is one of the most difficult language to learn
• According to the United States Foreign Service Institute, it
takes most English Speakers over 2,200 hours of time in
classroom to learn Chinese.

composed of strokes
• There are 26 strokes of
Chinese characters:
• 1 initial stroke
• 5 basic strokes
• 20 complicated strokes
6. Fun Facts about Chinese Language:
• Brain washing: A literal translation of the Chinese 洗脑
(Mandarin: Xǐnǎo)
• Ketchup: A pidgin English version of the Cantonese, which
means “tomato sauce” 茄汁 (Mandarin: Qié zhī) (Cantonese: Ke-
zap)
• Tea: An Anglicised version of the Hokkien 茶 (Mandarin: Chá),
(Hokkien: têe)
• Tycoon: A Sino-Japanese word that means “great-nobleman” 大
君 (Dà jūn) (Dai Kun)
• Typhoon: Comes from either Hokkien, Cantonese or mandarin,
all of which have similar pronunciations 台风 (Mandarin: Táifēng)
(Cantonese: Toi-Fung)
