The Neighborhood Watch film entered development in 2008 based on an idea by a Fox executive. Principal photography began in Georgia in October 2011, filming in areas around Atlanta like Inman Park and locations in Cobb County. Scenes were also shot at a high school in Smyrna and a converted wholesale store in Norcross. Filming concluded in January 2012, allowing improvisation.
The marketing campaign began in February 2012 with posters, a trailer, and a website. In March, the trailer and poster were pulled from Florida theaters due to controversy over the Trayvon Martin case.
