This document outlines an engineering challenge that tests understanding of forces like gravity and friction. Participants must work as a team to build a simple machine using an inclined plane to roll a marble at least 1 foot without falling off, with the fastest time winning. They should plan their design and roles beforehand, keeping the marble on the ramp through friction until it travels 1 foot, at which point it can fall off.

3. This Challenge will:
 Test your understanding of forces like gravity, friction,
and inertia.
 Test your ability to work with others to solve a
problem.
 Test your ability to work quickly and efficiently under
pressure of time.

4. Your Objective is:
 To create a simple machine (inclined plane) that will
move a marble (using the forces of gravity and inertia)
a distance of at least 1 foot.
 The marble must be on the device the entire time and
not fall off. Use friction to keep the marble on the
device.
 After it has traveled a distance of 1 foot it may fall off
the device and continue rolling.

5. Things to do
 Discuss and plan before you build.
 How will you keep your marble rolling?
 How will you keep your marble from rolling off of the
machine?
 Who will do what?
 Work together nicely. You are a team.

6. Things not to do:
 Fuss and whine
 Build things other than the objective.
 Build two ramps because you can’t get along.
 Steal Legos.

7. All groups that complete the
challenge:
 Will earn tickets
 But the group that keeps their marble on the machine
for the greatest distance will be declared the winner of
the engineering challenge.
