Rhetoric of U.S. Feminisms
Autumn 2019-2020
Final Paper Assignment
Description: Now that you have produced a research proposal and an annotated bibliography, it’s time to compose your final research paper on your selected event, which you will argue advanced a sociopolitical goal of feminism or contributed to a more multicultural American society. For purposes of this assignment, we will define multiculturalism as a willingness to be transformed by the multiple distinct but varied subjectivities informed by identity markers such as gender, race, sexual orientation, and socio-economic class, which overlap and intersect in complex and fluid arrangements. In a multicultural world, these distinct but varied voices are authorized to speak and empowered to shift our ontological formations such that we may move past dualistic thinking and, as Gloria Anzaldúa writes “stretch the psyche horizontally and vertically” toward “a more whole perspective, one that includes rather than excludes” (Freedman 388). Each of you has selected an event that you believe has contributed to these goals as articulated by the thinkers we’ve engaged this term. Now is your chance to explain your event’s meaning and argue for its importance.
Your final research paper should include the following parts in no particular order:
· a thesis statement that makes a specific claim about the impact your event had on our goals for a more just, more multicultural America; your thesis should help you fulfill your paper’s rhetorical exigence or primary purpose;
· background information that situates the event in its sociohistorical moment and scales the information given to the audience of readers you have in mind;
· a sustained, audience-aware argument that interprets the meaning of your event from a feminist perspective by relying on relevant scholarship;
· analysis of the rhetoric surrounding your event both from public/popular sources and academic sources;
· where applicable, description and analysis of normalizing/regulatory responses or backlashes to your event by institutions, ideological beliefs, or groups of citizens who push back against any advancements triggered by your event;
· optional: you may include a section that describes the need for additional work in the area advanced by your event.
Form: Papers should be approximately 2,250 words not including your works cited page. In addition to formatting your works cited page per MLA formatting, please also use that same format throughout your paper. Using MLA rules to guide you, be sure that all quoted material is fluidly integrated into the text, preceded by introduction and followed with parenthetical citations. While you will need to include other voices in your paper, do not subordinate your voice to those quoted in your paper. Use a confident, direct, and specific voice throughout your paper—avoid vague and wordy constructions—and remember to keep a specific audience in mind as you write.

An important part of our course is researching information on dive.docxgalerussel59292
An important part of our course is researching information on diversity and multiculturalism and its social, cultural, and ethical impact upon individual citizens, groups of people, and society at large.
Below are four scenarios pertaining to cultural diversity. For this assignment, you will prepare a research paper that focuses on one of these scenarios, analyzing what happened, what the consequences either are or might be, and how the situation can be corrected and or prevented in the future. These must be concrete suggestions that could actually be implemented rather than vague references or opinions. While the situations have been fictionalized, there have been actual situations that are very similar. You will submit the report in three sections throughout the course, with a due date for each section. These due dates are posted on the Course Schedule.
The Course Project should be six to eight pages in length, with an additional Title page and Reference page(s). The Reference page should include a minimum of four different scholarly, academically accepted books and/or journals used. Do not use Wikipedia and similar encyclopedia websites, such as about.com or buzzle.com. Please review the detailed instructions for each phase of the project, which you can find in the Assignment tab for that week. Your project will be graded as follows.
Here are the scenarios. If you happen to be familiar with an actual incident, you may request it as your scenario, but you will need my approval first.
1. A large hydroelectric dam built in the 1950s and 60s created a 1-million acre impoundment, and it has been a major means of both producing electricity and flood control for many decades. In early spring each year, the water level above the dam is lowered to allow a reservoir for upstream snow melt and runoff later released downstream in a controlled fashion. This annual event has drawn no notice until this past spring, when a Native American tribe whose reservation borders on the impoundment came forward to claim that an ancient burial ground had been revealed less than a mile above the dam when the water level was lowered. To them, this was sacred ground and disturbing the bones of their ancestors was tantamount to desecration. Citing both 19th century treaty agreements and contracts with the U.S. government at the time the dam was built concerning the sanctity of holy grounds, the tribe insists that the burial grounds cannot be submerged again and that the water level must be maintained at its present, lower level. They also say that their culture does not permit the removal and reburial of the remains and that the federal government has recognized the rights of Native Americans to protect their holy places. Anthropologists have surveyed the site and report that indeed it is an ancient burial ground, but that the people may be from a much older group than those presently claiming ancestry.
There are a number of problems presented. One, with no reservoir .

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

20. ● Glass ceiling Concepts:
● Glass ceiling is a metaphor used to represent an
invisible barrier that keeps a given demographic
(typically applied to minorities) from rising beyond
a certain level in a hierarchy.
● The metaphor was first coined by feminists in
reference to barriers in the careers of high-
achieving women. In the US, the concept is sometimes
extended to refer to obstacles hindering the
advancement of minority women, as well as minority
men.
● Within the same concepts of the other terms
surrounding the workplace, there are similar terms
for restrictions and barriers concerning women and
their roles within organizations and how they
coincide with their maternal duties.
21. ● These "Invisible Barriers“ function as
metaphors to describe the extra
circumstances that women undergo,
usually when trying to advance within
areas of their careers and often while
trying to advance within their lives
outside of their work spaces.
25. ● 1) Glass Ceiling:
● The United States Federal Glass Ceiling
Commission defines the glass ceiling as "the
● unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps
minorities and women from rising to the
upper
● rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of
their qualifications or achievements."
28. ● 2) Gender pay gap:
● The gender pay gap is the difference between
male and female earnings.
● In 2008 some studies suggested that the
female earnings of full-time workers were
17% lower than the earnings of their male
counterparts and that "30% of the variation
in gender wage gaps across developed
countries can be explained by discriminatory
practices in the labour market."
30. ● 3) Glass escalator: In addition to the glass ceiling, which
already is stopping women from climbing higher in success
in the workplace, a parallel phenomenon called the "glass
escalator" is occurring.
● This can be defined as how more men are joining fields that
were previously occupied mainly by women, such as nursing
and teaching, and within these job fields, the men are
riding right past women and going straight to the top,
similarly to if they were on an escalator and a woman was
taking stairs.
● Men are being offered more promotions than women and even
though women have worked just as hard, they are still not
being offered the same chances as men are in some
circumstances.
32. ● 4) Sticky floor: In the literature on gender
discrimination, the concept of "sticky floors“
complements the concept of a glass ceiling.
● Sticky floors can be described as the pattern that women
are, compared to men, less likely to start to climb the
job ladder.
● Thereby, this phenomenon is related to gender
differentials at the bottom of the wage distribution.
● They found empirical evidence for the existence of sticky
floors in countries such as Australia,Belgium, Italy,
Thailand and the United States.
34. ● 5) The frozen middle: Similar to the sticky
floor, the frozen middle describes the phenomenon
of women's progress up the corporate ladder
slowing, if not halting, in the ranks of middle
management.
36. ● 6) The second shift: The second shift focuses on
the idea that women theoretically work a second
shift in the manner of having a greater workload,
not just doing a greater share of domestic work.
● All of the task that are engaged in outside of
the workplace are mainly tied to motherhood.
● Depending on location, household income,
educational attainment, ethnicity and location.
Data shows that women do work a second shift in
the sense of having a greater workload.
38. 7) Mommy Track: "Mommy Track" is a term used to describe
women who simply disregard their career and professional duties
in order to satisfy the needs of their families.
--Women are often subject to long work hours that creates an
imbalance within the workfamily schedule.
--There is research suggesting that women were able to function
on a parttime professional schedule compared to others who
worked full-time while still engaged in external family activities.
--The research also suggests, flexible work arrangements allow
for
the achievement of a healthy work and family balance.
42. The noun gender
studies is
uncountable.
The plural form
of gender studies is
also gender studies.
43. Gender studies
--Gender studies is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to
analysing gender identity and gendered representation.
--It includes women's studies (concerning women, feminism, gender, and
politics), men's studies and queer studies.
--Its rise to prominence, especially in Western universities after 1990,
has been noted as a success of deconstructionism.
--Sometimes, gender studies is offered together with study of sexuality.
--These disciplines study gender and sexuality in the fields of literature,
linguistics, human geography, history, political science, archaeology,
economics, sociology, psychology, anthropology, cinema, musicology,
media studies, human development, law, public health and medicine.
-- It also analyzes how race, ethnicity, location, class, nationality, and
disability intersect with the categories of gender and sexuality
47. Abstract
After the infamous Delhi gang rape incident that took place in the
country in the year 2012, there was a dire need to condemn and
make stricter laws against such crimes against women.
The government constituted a committee under the chairmanship
of the former Chief Justice of India, Justice J.S.Varma to suggest
guidelines for the protection of women and this was due to take
shape in the form of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013.
The recommendations of the committee were however not taken
into consideration as a whole and gender sensitive or gender
specific laws were framed as a result of bowing down to feminist
pressures opposing to gender neutral laws that were recommended
by the committee
48. The author, in the light of the recent Judgments of the Supreme
Court of India namely the Triple Talaq Judgment and the Section
498A Judgment tries to examine the loopholes in the Women
Protection Laws in India that are gender specific and penalizes only
the male gender and does not give equal protection to the male
gender with respect to the same crimes being committed against
them..
The author throughout this article shows forth how these recent
judgments have set the ball rolling towards having laws that
are gender neutral in India owing to bestowing equal rights on
women which will pave way towards attaining equality and social
justice.
