In March 2017, Alphabet’s CEO Larry Page, leaned on a dusty wooden railing and gazed across the
vastness of Moffett Airfield’s Hangar Two. A half-dozen illuminated balloons, each fifteen meters in
diameter, were floating before him in the cavern-like space. Three years earlier, he had signed a $1.2
billion, sixty-year lease for the airfield’s largest hangars, which were only a few miles from Alphabet’s
Mountain View, California headquarters.2 Originally built in the 1940s to house the US Navy’s blimp
fleet, the hangars were now being used to house Alphabet’s fleet of private jets and some of its more
ambitious projects. The balloons were part of Project Loon, a plan to use high-altitude balloons to
bring Internet access to the most remote corners of the world. The project’s name was chosen both for
its connection to flight and its lunacy.3
Page’s thoughts were interrupted by the buzzing of his Pixel smartphone. It was a reminder that he
had scheduled a meeting with Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet’s Google subsidiary. In August 2015,
Google’s cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced that they would be restructuring the com-
pany as a diversified conglomerate under the name Alphabet. The Google cofounders indicated that
they were inspired by Berkshire Hathaway’s conglomerate structure through which the famed inves-
tor, Warren Buffet, successfully led an ensemble of widely different businesses over several decades.4
Alphabet’s largest subsidiary would retain the Google name and focus on Internet-related services and
products with Pichai as CEO. A former McKinsey consultant, Pichai had quickly risen through the
Google ranks after joining the technology firm in 2004.
Page walked across the tarmac to his Tesla Model X parked in front of the hangar. As he let the
car’s autopilot drive him to Google’s offices, Page’s thoughts switched from Project Loon to more ter-
restrial concerns. Although perceived as a technology company, Google was in many ways more of an
advertising company. In fact, advertising accounted for almost 90 percent of Google’s 2016 revenue.
Although the portion of revenue from advertising had decreased in 2016, it still funded the clear
majority of Google’s user services and Alphabet’s “Other Bets,” including Project Loon (Exhibit 1).

On August 10, 2015, Google’s CEO, Larry Page, announced that Google Inc. would
become Alphabet Inc., a holding company of which Google (comprising the compa-
ny’s search and Internet businesses) would be the biggest operating company. Extracts
of the announcement are reproduced in Exhibit 1. The organizational structure of
Alphabet is shown in Figure 1.
The creation of Alphabet was widely viewed as Google’s top management finally
conceding to investors’ demands for greater transparency by separating Google’s pri-
mary source of profits, its search business, from Google’s other businesses. It was also
a confirmation by Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, that their company
was no longer simply a search company. The announcement was a reaffirmation of the
company’s commitment to developing and commercialization of revolutionary tech-
nologies. This quest had already led Google beyond search, beyond the provision of
information, and beyond software into mobile devices, home appliances, life sciences,
self-driving cars, broadband services, digital eyewear, and a host of other ventures.
Soon after its founding, Google had proclaimed “Ten Things We Know To Be True”—
a set of business principles that would guide the company’s development. Second on
the list was, “It’s best to do one thing really, really well,” to which the response was:
“We do search.”1
Google—now Alphabet—was no longer a search company. But what was it?
Founders Brin and Page had consistently emphasized that the essence of their
company was applying technology to improving the lives of people. Page had
declared, “The societal goal is our primary goal,” the challenge being to: “... use all
these resources ... and have a much more positive impact on the world?”2
If Alphabet was to be described by technology—then which technologies? From
the beginning Google/Alphabet has been about algorithms. Initially, its PageRank
algorithm, but increasingly artificial intelligence algorithms that model the functioning
of the human brain. By combining machine learning and artificial intelligence, Alphabet
is identifying areas where machine intelligence can be superior to human intelligence.
The scope of these applications—from autonomous driving to medical diagnosis, to
facial recognition, to education—seems limitless.
The diversity of Alphabet’s business and technological initiatives also fueled suspi-
cions about the motivations of the founders, Brin and Page. Despite their proclama-
tions to pursue the good of society and to “do no evil,” it seemed to some that Google
was locked in battle with Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft for the control of
cyberspace.

On August 10, 2015, Google’s CEO, Larry Page, announced that Google Inc. would
become Alphabet Inc., a holding company of which Google (comprising the compa-
ny’s search and Internet businesses) would be the biggest operating company. Extracts
of the announcement are reproduced in Exhibit 1. The organizational structure of
Alphabet is shown in Figure 1.
The creation of Alphabet was widely viewed as Google’s top management finally
conceding to investors’ demands for greater transparency by separating Google’s pri-
mary source of profits, its search business, from Google’s other businesses. It was also
a confirmation by Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, that their company
was no longer simply a search company. The announcement was a reaffirmation of the
company’s commitment to developing and commercialization of revolutionary tech-
nologies. This quest had already led Google beyond search, beyond the provision of
information, and beyond software into mobile devices, home appliances, life sciences,
self-driving cars, broadband services, digital eyewear, and a host of other ventures.
Soon after its founding, Google had proclaimed “Ten Things We Know To Be True”—
a set of business principles that would guide the company’s development. Second on
the list was, “It’s best to do one thing really, really well,” to which the response was:
“We do search.”1
Google—now Alphabet—was no longer a search company. But what was it?
Founders Brin and Page had consistently emphasized that the essence of their
company was applying technology to improving the lives of people. Page had
declared, “The societal goal is our primary goal,” the challenge being to: “... use all
these resources ... and have a much more positive impact on the world?”2
If Alphabet was to be described by technology—then which technologies? From
the beginning Google/Alphabet has been about algorithms. Initially, its PageRank
algorithm, but increasingly artificial intelligence algorithms that model the functioning
of the human brain. By combining machine learning and artificial intelligence, Alphabet
is identifying areas where machine intelligence can be superior to human intelligence.
The scope of these applications—from autonomous driving to medical diagnosis, to
facial recognition, to education—seems limitless.
The diversity of Alphabet’s business and technological initiatives also fueled suspi-
cions about the motivations of the founders, Brin and Page. Despite their proclama-
tions to pursue the good of society and to “do no evil,” it seemed to some that Google
was locked in battle with Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft for the control of
cyberspace.

- 1. Limo drivers as well as taxi drivers are beginning to get worried about the future of their jobs. Driverless cars have been talked about practically non-stop in recent years. Will cab and limo drivers be replaced by cars that can drive themselves? Many people think that it seems to be on the horizon after Google’s former executive David Krane made a 258 million dollar investment in Uber last year. David Krane is currently a general partner with Google Ventures and it is predicted that this huge investment in Uber will allow google’s driverless cars to take over the fleet of manned cars and trucks that Uber has. However when Krane was asked about the investment he said that, “these things are exciting, incredibly forward but nowhere near ready for prime time.” This statement also said that he rode in a Google car from Silicon Valley to San Francisco and that a human driver was involved in the beginning, the end and a few times in the middle. This 259 Million dollar investment from Dave Krane is the largest single bet that the Uber cab company has received. Making David Krane’s involvement in Uber as well as Google a very interesting transaction to watch.
