LED lighting is getting increasing traction as
an energy saving method in commercial
lighting retrofits for industry, government,
warehousing, education, and municipalities.
These utility subsidized installations are now
saving 50% on lighting costs.
Once thought to be too costly for com-
mercial buildings, LED lighting is increasing-
ly popping up in warehouses, commercial
facilities, college and school campuses as
part of energy efficiency retrofit projects. In
many cases, the upfront cost is being subsi-
dized by the local electric utility. These
subsidies can radically reduce the upfront
nstallation costs, and in some cases elimi-
nate them.
CASE STUDY: Quantum Electric, in Spo-
kane, WA installed a major LED Lighting
retrofit for the University of Idaho in Mos-
cow, ID. Over 65,000 lighting devices were
replaced with LED light sources. The fi-
nancing for the project was subsidized by
Avista Utilities who wrote a check in excess
of $1,000,000.00. The savings in lighting
costs to the University over the next ten
years will be $3,550,000.00 The cost to the
University for this retrofit upgrade to LED
lighting was ZERO.
