Finding a Fit: How to Evaluate a Company's Culture and the OpportunityPoornima Vijayashanker
Ever looked at a job description and thought, "Wow I am totally NOT qualified..." Or left an interview thinking, "Hmm I don't even know what it's like to work there." Or wonder, "What happens after I accept this offer?"
If you've ever been too afraid to apply for a position, thinking that it might be a stretch, but desperately wanted to be more than just gainfully employed, and instead feel fulfilled, challenged, and appreciated, then the first forum on 2014 is for YOU!
In this upcoming forum titled Finding a Fit, you'll learn:
• Why it's important that you apply to positions even though you might feel under-qualified
• How to determine if a company has a culture that meets your needs
• How to confidently and compassionately set standards for you boss and colleagues before you accept an offer
Poornima Vijayashanker deliveries a keynote at SunShine PHP Conference 2015. In the keynote she talks about what culture is, and how it's built on identity, rituals, and decision-making.
For anyone interested in promoting a diverse workplace this presentation is filled with helpful suggestion to make it a friendlier place. It also sheds light into why women or anyone might be averse to applying for positions or holding themselves back from taking on challenging roles.
In this Femgineer Forum, Poornima Vijayashanker explains the importance of needing female leadership in high tech, and provides some strategies for how to become a leader.
Despite the growing push of women to join tech professions, the attrition rate of women in technology is still pretty high. Often times it has less to do with their technical prowess, and more to do with an environment that is less than hospitable.
In this Femgineer Forum we'll cover the following:
• How to encourage women to stay technical throughout their careers
• How women can participate more fully and effectively on teams
• How women can take on technical leadership roles
If you're tired of working on the same mind-numbing projects, this presentation will who you how you can present projects to get them approved within your current company.
In this lecture, Poornima covers best practices for identifying who customers are, creating personas, and conducting customer interviews.

Slides for the presentation by Patricia McKellar (UKCLE) and Karen Barton (Glasgow Graduate School of Law) at the Higher Education Academy's ePortfolios for the 21st century meeting on 23 April 2008.
Keynote delivered at Podim Conference in Maribor, Slovenia on May 11, 2016. Talking about the common myths that hold people back from developing their products, and what to consider before catering to a global user base.
I gave this talk at the Frontiers of Interaction Conference in Milan, Italy. I talked about how global investment in fintech is on the rise, provide a breakdown across countries, plus the growing demand for fintech products, and the importance of design as a way to build trust with users.
Many product people overlook the importance of providing their users with a positive first-time experience—or they just don’t know how. As a result, signups never become customers. But you can improve your onboarding experience and turn signups into sales (we’ll show you how).
In this workshop, you'll learn:
1. Why it's important to provide users with a positive first time experience
2. Common mistakes people make that cause them to lose users in the signup stage
3. Techniques to get users to come back and convert to paying customers
4. How to persuade your team to prioritize user onboarding
By now you've probably heard enough times the importance of metrics. In the initial stages of a startup there isn't a lot of data, so we need to get some! There are some crucial initial steps you need to take to get set and collect metrics. In this talk I'll present how to take an initial snapshot, setup some initial metrics to track your progress, align them with milestones, and how you can use those metrics to guide your decision making and spend your limited time wisely.
Developers rely on manipulating data to create an engaging product for users. But in the early stages of a product, there is a dearth of it, which can make the user experience dull. Then as the product ages, the amount of data increases, and can become too noisy if not properly organized. In this talk, Poornima Vijayashanker will provide some strategies for dealing with data life cycles, and how to understand what stage you're at to guide product development.
Public speaking can be scary, but it can also be a great way to catapult your career!
Unfortunately people hold themselves back from speaking at conferences because they either don't know what to share, or feel like they need to be an expert in order to speak.
In this event, you'll learn:
• Why you should speak at technical conferences
• How to brainstorm and come up with topics to talk about
• How to submit a proposal
• How to structure a talk, engage with an audience, and keep those butterflies in your stomach at bay!
Watch the talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJfdxEuJVdM
Many great innovations began as toys built by individuals who love to tinker. In this talk, Poornima Vijayashanker tells us that she was introduced to technology, as a child, by her father who talked to her about ‘wafers and chips’. At home, she wasn’t afraid to take things apart; she even programmed the VCR, and installed the sound card in her family’s first PC. While people use technology, they fear learning how to code and building things. Machines are seen as a black box that should be left alone! In her talk she explains that we need to reignite people’s curiosity and imagination by getting back to engineering’s roots – tinkering and playing with things to see how they work.
It's often unclear what tracks are available to people in technical careers such as designers, engineers, and product managers within any size organization. The path chosen by many is the management track, but what if you want to stay technical? Are there alternatives?
In this talk, you'll learn:
• What to think about when you're evaluating the choice between pursuing a management vs a technical track
• The opportunities that are available to you if you choose to go down a technical track, what the day-to-day will be like, and how to prepare for this path
Whether you're just getting started in your career or have been working for awhile you'll benefit from the strategies covered in this talk.
You'll learn:
• Why people get promoted
• How to prepare for a promotion
• What to do about past performance
• What to do if you're passed up for a promotion
Whether you're a technical or non-technical founder you will need to recruit technical talent to help you scale your startup. In this talk, I'll cover strategies for how to attract and close top technical candidates for an early stage startup.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

If we want to get paid on time, then we
need to notify students of expired
memberships.
As a yoga studio owner, I want to notify
students the moment they expire, so that I
will get paid on time.
Students need to pay.
I want my students to pre-pay for classes
so that I know I’m getting paid on time. I
also want a way to automatically renew
them.
As a yoga studio owner, I want all
students to pre-pay for class packages
AND I want to provide an option to do this
automatically.
