Business people love Excel…but why? Because Excel allows us to do almost everything. From simple tables, sheets with complex calculations under the covers to complete applications with a “real” backend - everything is possible with Excel. It even manages to trick us into believing that even the most sophisticated spreadsheets do not have anything to do with programming. But is it really so different from programming? Or is a Mylyn filtered Eclipse workspace actually remarkably similar to a filtered table that directly highlights the relevant data? What other commonalities do exist and what can we learn from Excel and its users - the business people, requirements engineers and analysts? Since many years we tried to close the gap between programmers and business people with DSLs (Domain Specific Languages) - formal languages, that use the vocabulary and the notation of the domain experts. We tried graphical, text-based or best of breed approaches (read: graphical and textual). But to be honest, we rarely managed to define a language, that convinced the business people. After all, we were still building “just” another scary IDE. Turns out, that nothing cloaks a programming environment as Excel does. Not even web based editors for DSLs helped to mitigate that problem. They helped to reduce the entry barrier, but business people want to have forms and diagrams and fancy notations with custom domain specific symbols, like in insurance mathematics. Despite the full unicode charset, these expectations are hard to meet with plain text. Looking at other approaches, like projectional editors (learning from Excel again), the mixture of different representations becomes easier. In this session, we would like to show you where we see the problem and what the next steps could be to make business people using DSLs to finally close the gap and trick them into programming even without Excel.

Add-Ons are what make ExpressionEngine the flexible powerhouse that it is today. Being able to write your own simple plugins or incredibly expansive modules allows you to mold ExpressionEngine to nearly any task that your website might require. However, with that power comes a great responsibility to insure that your code is not slowing down the entire site or unduly stressing the server through bad code architecture.
There are simple tools already built into ExpressionEngine and PHP that you can use to see precisely what your Add-On is doing during page processing and where it might be doing more work than is absolutely necessary. Every developer should use these to optimize their work from the very beginning of development, prior to release. This workshop will explain these tools and how you can use them effectively. It will also delve deeper into optimization techniques and tricks that will keep your code light and clean, while finding a balance between functionality and performance.

Formatting ForThe Masses
Code formatting is an opinionated beast. It always has been a matter of taste, and it always will be a matter of taste. This is the reason, why professional formatting tools, such as Eclipse JDT, offer a gazillion number of options. Which is still not sufficient enough. After all, you can override them inline with tag-comments to make the formatter shut up. Can't we do better than that? What if we could use machine learning techniques to detect the preferred code style that was use in a codebase so far? Turns out, we can.
The Antlr Codebuff project (https://github.com/antlr/codebuff) offers a generic formatter for pretty much any given language. As long as a grammar file exists, existing source can be analyzed to learn about the rules that have been applied while writing the code. Those can than be used to pretty print newly written code. No configuration required. And existing sources will stay as nicely formatted as they are. In the end, the primary purpose of code formatting is not to re-arrange all the keywords, but to make the source layout consistent.
In this talk, we will demonstrate the usage of the codebuff project and how it can be used to format the sources of your repo in a consistent way. We'll also show some other gems that have been revealed when toying around with the technology.

Being able to write your own simple plugins or incredibly expansive modules allows you to mold ExpressionEngine to nearly any task that your website might require. However, with that power comes a great responsibility to insure that your code is not slowing down the entire site or unduly stressing the server through bad code architecture.
There are simple tools already built into ExpressionEngine and PHP that you can use to see precisely what your Add-On is doing during page processing and where it might be doing more work than is absolutely necessary. Every developer should use these to optimize their work from the very beginning of development, prior to release. This workshop will explain these tools and how you can use them effectively. It will also delve deeper into optimization techniques and tricks that will keep your code light and clean, while finding a balance between functionality and performance.

Formatting ForThe Masses
Code formatting is an opinionated beast. It always has been a matter of taste, and it always will be a matter of taste. This is the reason, why professional formatting tools, such as Eclipse JDT, offer a gazillion number of options. Which is still not sufficient enough. After all, you can override them inline with tag-comments to make the formatter shut up. Can't we do better than that? What if we could use machine learning techniques to detect the preferred code style that was use in a codebase so far? Turns out, we can.
The Antlr Codebuff project (https://github.com/antlr/codebuff) offers a generic formatter for pretty much any given language. As long as a grammar file exists, existing source can be analyzed to learn about the rules that have been applied while writing the code. Those can than be used to pretty print newly written code. No configuration required. And existing sources will stay as nicely formatted as they are. In the end, the primary purpose of code formatting is not to re-arrange all the keywords, but to make the source layout consistent.
In this talk, we will demonstrate the usage of the codebuff project and how it can be used to format the sources of your repo in a consistent way. We'll also show some other gems that have been revealed when toying around with the technology.
Deep dive into Xtext scoping local and global scopes explained
This document discusses scoping in Xtext, including local versus global scoping, how scopes are created, and some best practices when working with scopes. Key points include:
- Scopes describe the reachable elements in a given context and map names to EObjects.
- Local scopes are created by language developers while the global scope (index) tracks elements across resources.
- Language builders override getScope() to define scoping logic. Avoid cyclic references when collecting elements.
- The global index tracks exported elements from resource descriptions to enable cross-file references.
- Best practices include using user data instead of resolving proxies, validating instead of tight scoping, and avoiding direct resource loading.
Xtext beyond the defaults - how to tackle performance problems
Nearly every Eclipse user is aware what Xtext is and what it is useful for. It is always a pleasure to see in which kind of areas it is used.
One reason is clearly, that it is really easy to build a first working example in no time. The grammar alone is sufficient and the rest is done by a code generator. Xtext will generate stub classes, that are ready to fill in individual logic for different areas.
By doing that most of the things just work, because Xtext comes with a lot of defaults that suits in most of the cases.
But as projects get bigger and the amount of models grow, the defaults might not scale and you might need to tweak your language to make working smooth again.
Here it becomes more complicated and you need to understand what’s going on under the covers.
In this session I will go through typical problems and solutions, that we have seen in customer projects. Sometimes it’s a tradeoff to tackle those problems, but it’s important to understand the implications.
For some typical examples I will go into details and explain what’s going on under the covers.
After the session attendees should have an idea how to tweak their own languages and why it might be worth the effort to migrate to a newer version of Xtext.
Using Xcore with Xtext
Xcore is a textual format to define ecore models. This not only makes editing and reading much more convenient but has other cool advantages as well. Xcore, for instance, allows to embed Xbase expressions to define logic within EOperations and the like.
In this session you will learn, why and when using Xcore is a good idea and how to use it with Xtext languages. I will explain talk about which URIs to use, and how to properly configure the MWE2 file as well as more complicated setups, with multiple languages and mixtures of ecore, xcore and generated models.
Code Generation idioms with Xtend
In this session, you will learn about typical best practices and idioms for building continuously running, extensible and maintainable code generators with Xtend. We think Xtend is the best language for code generation available today.
Introduction to Xbase
Xtext makes it easy to define domain specific languages, but making your DSL a first class programming artifact with support for expressions and integration with Java is a hard thing if you do it from scratch. The Xbase library is an integral part of the Xtext framework. Xbase implements the bridge from DSLs to Java. It greatly simplifies your language implementation, if you want to run your DSL on the JVM. Xbase consists of a very powerful Java-like expression grammar and implements all the necessary infrastructure to link your DSL against existing Java types, compile it to executable code and validate it against the JVM specific constraints. In this session I want to explain how Xbase works under the covers and dive into its APIs. You will see, how to enhance your language and make it highly expressive and powerful without introducing an artificial gap to the Java platform. If you want your DSL to be a first class programming artifact, come to this session and see how to benefit best from Xbase.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
