Slideshare
Have you ever created an exciting PowerPoint presentation and known that others in your
field could benefit from the slides or ideas contained in them? Slideshare was recently voted*
amongst the world’s top 10 tools for education and learning and is a great place to save your
presentations. You can also save time by directing your students to existing presentations or
even use them in your classrooms.
What is Slideshare?
Slideshare is a website where you can upload and share PowerPoint presentations. Once you
have created a free account on the website you can upload as many presentations as you
wish. The presentations are stored online and can be accessed anywhere, anytime by you
and others in your field.
How can I use Slideshare?
• There may already be presentations out there that cover the information that you are
teaching - why re-invent the wheel if someone has already done it for you?
• Put your presentations online so that students can access them outside of class to revise
or catch up on content that has been missed.
• Collaborate or get in touch with other educators to share ideas, generate business or
create resources that can be used for everyone.
• Augment existing resources with a visual element that can enhance learning.
What equipment do you need?
Just a computer with internet access, and a PowerPoint presentation.
Before you get started
Take a look at some of the other presentations on the Slideshare website. Try to establish which
ones are most effective at communicating ideas, and what elements constitute an exciting
and interesting PowerPoint. A great starting place is Smart Presentation - Meet Monkey.
Let’s have a go!
1. Select an existing presentation or create one that you can use as a teaching resource now
or in the future.
2. Open your internet browser and go to the Slideshare site at http://www.slideshare.net/

3. Click on the option “Get a Free Account”. If you wish you can always upgrade to a
professional account at a later stage.
4. Click on “Create” a new account.

5. The new account requires a username, password and valid current email address. Once
you have entered the required information, choose to “Sign Up”.
6. Once you have completed this step, you will receive an email to the nominated account
asking you to verify your email address. Open the email and click on the link that that
says “confirm your email”. This will open up the Slideshare website in a new window in
your web browser.
7. You will now be logged into your free account within Slideshare. Click on the “Upload”
button to start uploading your presentation.

8. Choose to upload your presentation, “Publicly”. With a free account you do not have the
option to select a private upload that can only be accessed by specific users. This means
that your presentation and its contents will be able to be viewed by all visitors to the site.
9. Now select the PowerPoint presentation file to upload to the Slideshare site from the
appropriate folder on your PC or Mac and click the Open button.

10. While the file is being uploaded (it may take a while!) you can fill in some basic information
about the presentation. A name for the presentation should be short and relevant to the
topic, and a brief description is helpful for potential viewers.
Tags can be added to your presentation information. Tags are one-word descriptions that
help people locate your presentation when searching through the Slideshare website.
For example a presentation on “cooking” might have the tags: cooking, mexican, recipe,
chicken, burritos, food. Each tag should be separated by a comma and you can type in
as many as you like.
You must also choose a category for the presentation to be filed under, from the drop
down list of categories.
Once you are happy with the presentation information, you can click on the Save button,
or you may find that Slideshare has saved it automatically for you. If you want to edit this
information, you can do so at any time even after the presentation has been published.
11. Once the presentation has been uploaded fully and the information is complete, it will be
published automatically for you.

You now have an opportunity to view how the finished product looks, and even scroll
through the slides.
12. Slideshare offers you the option to help spread the word about your great presentation.
You can use Twitter, Facebook or email to let your audience know where to find it. The
presentation can also be accessed by people going to the Slideshare website and
searching on the topic or by selecting it through the Slideshare website categories.
13. If at any time you wish to view your uploaded presentation, edit it or delete it, you can
access it by logging into your Slideshare account and clicking on the “My Uploads” option.

You have uploaded a great resource to the Slideshare website that other educators and students
can learn from, use and enjoy. Don’t be surprised if you find further great presentations on
Slideshare that you can use in your classroom, and make sure you let your students know how
to find your presentations.
