Learning Goals

The goals for this unit are based on the Georgia Common Core Performance Standards for sixth

grade math. The students in these classes are performing below or at grade level on the Criterion

Referenced Competency Tests. The new implement of the Common Core Standards are gearing students

to be able to answers open ended questions. Therefore, in my classroom I will use a lot of open ended

questions instead of the normal multiple choice questions. The specific learning goals for this unit are as

followed:

The student will be able to write and evaluate expressions (Common Core Standard: MCC6.EE.1).

The student will understand how to solve problems using order of operations (Common Core Standard:

MCC6.EE.2c).

The types of learning goals listed above for this unit is complex problem solving skills and transferring

ideas to new contexts. In addition, both of these learning goals are in class lecture level learning goals.

These are goals we will work through in class discussions and exercises. Overall, these learning goals are

important, because students can use these skills to help solve real-world application problems. In

addition, these learning goals are important factors for students to master as they will see it again

throughout their entire mathematics studies.
