LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
The main characteristics of a learning environment are:
● Learning is the purpose of the environment.
● The environment should be aligned with the goals of the
institution.
● It should be safe, engaging, and conducive to learning.
Learning environments are places where
people learn
focused on assessment
and feedback to help
learners improve their
skills
Assessment-centered
Types of Learning Environment
focused on how learners
learn best
01
Learner-centered
focused on the
knowledge that learners
acquire through the
course materials
02
Knowledge-centered
03
focused on building a
community that works
together to achieve tasks
04
Community-centered
Learner-centered
Cons
There are many benefits that come with learner-centered learning
environments but they also have some drawbacks
Pros
● Learners feel more confident in their ability
to learn because they can control their own
pace of learning.
● There is less pressure for learners because
the space is learner-centered.
● There is more room for creativity because
learners are encouraged to try new
activities.
● There is a greater chance for students to
feel a sense of accomplishment.
•Learner-centered learning
environments require a lot of
resources such as time, money,
and space.
•There is the risk that learners will
not take advantage of all the
opportunities available because
they are unsure how to use them
effectively.
An example of a learner-centered learning environment is an
online course where students can explore topics at their own
pace. This allows them to work through the content in small
chunks, which helps them retain information better.
The teacher would then
take this concept one step
further, connecting this
new knowledge to a real-
life scenario
Knowledge-centered
a teacher directly teaches
a concept, such as how to
find area and perimeter
The students would actually
measure the area and perimeter
of the classroom and the hallway,
using the measurements to
calculate how much tile would
need to be ordered. This would
give them the understanding that
these new math skills are used in
real jobs, such as installing tile.
Assessment-centered
 end-of-unit or course assessment
 tests
 teacher-made end-of-unit exams
Community-centered learning environments promote safe, positive
environments to boost student engagement and learning
Community-centered
CONCLUSIONS
Teaching does not necessarily imply learning has occurred. Whilst there are a number
of principles and strategies to create effective and quality teaching practices, the most
significant are understanding how your students learn and what they need to
succeed. With this learner-centred approach to teaching, the focus is on
acknowledging the student voice as central to the learning experience. Before, during
and after any teaching activity, you therefore consider who your learners are, what they
bring to the learning environment, and what their needs are in relation to engaging and
succeeding in learning.
Understanding your learners and their needs
