Spider Man
Master scene script MSS is a standard format which is accepted for film productions. It is
designed to offer a simple and easy to access format for producers to show investors. It
also shows a mix of descriptions and dialogue to allow the reader to follow the plot. The
script ill be using is the spiderman script.
EXT. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - DAY
-they're in Manhattan, in front of an impressive old building on
the Columbia campus. A yellow school bus is parked at the curb; a
bunch of HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS scurry like insects up the marble
steps. A stressed out TEACHER with a clipboard is next to the bus.
TEACHER

In modern scripts the use of slug lines is important because they tell us whether the
scene is an exterior or interior scene where the scene takes place (location) and what
point in time of the day is taken. On this script we have WXT. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY -
DAY from this we can tell that they are outside during the day in front of a University.
Scripts also use Courier font and size wise its 12-single spaced they use courier font
because it is a fix pitch or how other people say it monospaced font, which means that
each character and space is the same width.
However, Courier font is not the best looking but it is very predicable because if the
monospacing makes courier a consistent representation of the one page equals one-
minute rule. If we were to use a proportional font of mixture of spacing would make rule
less accurate.

the building is and kind of telling us how small they are compared to the building.
Also describing what is around them helps the readers or those that rather read the
script and haven’t yet seen the film helps them realise what’s around them giving
information to the last detail from an old building to a curb is pretty good detail and
helps the people reading realise what’s around them. Yet again the descriptive language
not also shows what’s around them, but it sets a certain mood t oo as we can see the
script tells us that there is a stressed out teacher thar sets a mood and wants you to
continue reading on to find out why and what could happen next. “They are in

describe to us where the set is taking place. Also it states about the building it tells us
how old it is and perhaps how small they are to it. This passes the feeling that the
building is massive compare to them which it is but the use of descriptive text makes us
Imagine the scene itself. This is important because it shows where the scene is taking
place in a grand and impressive location. It also makes us sympathies for the characters
because they seem powerless in this scene.
“I need you in the building now” The use if commands in this sentence helps us realise
that there is someone with a higher priority in the scene a teacher I believe but we can
see that she’s only doing her job and that’s to tell the students to go inside t he building.
Bu the use of text passes us the feeling that she has power in the scene which isn’t false
she’s a higher tear than a student which makes her instantly in power and the students
feel powerless ones again.
Dialogue blocks are also knowing as speeches and are composed of 3-parts character
name wryly and dialogue. Character’s names are written in capitals whereas wry lies are
written in lowercase inside the parenthesis and dialogue is written in normal sentences
case. Wry lies should only be used if the subtext of the dialogue is not clear. Its best of
they are kept to the minimum as possible because they indicate how a line should be
said.
Shooting scripts The Dunches
Compare to screenplays these kinds of scripts are used to produc e the product. This
suggests that it will focus on the technical aspects of the film instead of the
narrative/story. A visual example of description shooting script is the screenshot I have

3. taken of the Romance Dunches it shows that they are focused on what is visual on
screen. Compared to the narrative description of character’s in the MSS, The Duchess
has a lot more structured and uniform. This shooting script cuts down on explaining how
characters thoughts are portrayed into actions and instead of focuses on formatted to
indicate how this should play in production. However, the description only mentions the
way the characters appear to save the production crew/ actors the off deciding how each
scene should look on the day of filming. We can see it includes specific mentions of
camera shot types, framing and background music playing. Therefor these conventions
of a shooting script are highly beneficial to directors and camera crew, because they
have their instruction of how to carry each scene out written down into paper to use
while filming. This could result in saving time which means saving money perhaps. This
format also would help the camera crew a lot better than the MSS format because the
camera crew doesn’t need to know the character background in the film or play, they
just need to know what shot needs to be shot.
Another feature to add to shooting scripts is a scene number while they are sometimes
added to to MSS, they should be presented in Sc format. They perhaps will be helpful in
revisions and drafts.
However, the idea of selling the Dunchess will be harder because it is not focusing on the
story but its more focused on how to make it. The person looking to commission may
not even know the technicalities of film production, therefore that additional info
provided in the shooting script would just deter then and make understanding the
narrative being pitched to the nearly impossible. Even though these are both scripts for
films, the difference is how the description is formatted is clear. This is further proof of
what different formatting conventions look like in the industry and how they benefit the
script allowing it to fulfil its specific role in the creative process.
Radio domestic atmos

4. This is a good example of how radio scripts are formatted as well as how this style
contrasts to the previous examples I have analysed. Radio script formatting conventions
have been tailored to the nature of that product. A radio entirely audio based with no
visual content which means no audience can see you at all. Because of this formatting
tends to favour dialogue blocks and sounds ques to convey/ develop the narrative
instead of the paragraphs of narrative description.
However, radio scripts have no need to for a load of narrative description boxes to
support the dialogue. Radio formatting instead of conventionally features small lines
describing whatever music or sound or effects that needs to be added in during posts
production. Alongside there is a specific name for sound effects example foley
techniques or an archive of sounds that have been sourced and planned. Including the
name of the sound needed creates excellent communication between the scriptwriter
and the production crew, by adding in the sound the writer has in mind they have saved
the editors a lot of time during production making their jobs easier and saving budget.
Due to there being less narrative description there is a heavy dependence in dialogue
blocks in radio formatting. It is a convention in this sector to focus on the characters
speech, quite often the radio scripts will rely heavily on the voice actor to be able to
convey the characters feelings and emotions their performance.
Radio scripts number lines of dialog instead of the scenes. This is because voice actor
delivers their lines independently out of chronological order therefore its easier to
pinpoint the exact number of their lines and get it finished quicker.
