This document describes Daniel Goleman's six styles of leadership: coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching. Each style is defined by the leader's demands, how they mobilize people, their underlying competencies, when the style works best, and the impact on climate. The coercive style demands immediate compliance and works best in crises. The authoritative style mobilizes people towards a vision and works best when new directions are needed. The affiliative style builds relationships and works best to motivate people during stress.
