We wanted to translate the concepts in empowerment theory into every day language in order to communicate clearly with people who are carrying out the YES curriculum.
The theory has three primary components: intrapersonal empowerment, interpersonal empowerment, and behavioral empowerment. We express these as: “feeling”, “connecting” and “doing”. Feeling refers to the beliefs and perceptions that you have about yourself. Connecting refers to your relationships with others and with the surrounding environment. Doing refers to the actions that you take that affect your surroundings and yourself.
Each of these aspects of empowerment can be measured by several psychological constructs. These are reflected in our model by simple statements, such as “I am good at leading groups” (leadership efficacy), “I know adults who can help me solve problems” (adult resources), and “I participate in neighborhood activities” (community engagement).
When YES group leaders connect the curriculum with its underlying concepts they can do a better job of communicating the intent of each activity to participating youth.

I recently won a Finalist Award in Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government Programme. For this, I am immensely grateful. The 2014 awards, hosted by CEO Communications, received 9000 entries from 34 African countries.
The Award made me think about the overall impact of women in business. I looked at examples of women who achieve inspirational things. And I asked myself this question:
What legacy can we create through the influence we have each and every day?

Youth Philanthropy: Empowering Youth to Become Contributing Members of SocietyJason Brewer
Philanthropy has become a secondary focus in today's "me driven" society. The presentation explores the importance of creating a culture of philanthropy for today's younger generation.
Mentoring is a universal practice present in almost every culture. In Africa, mentoring is mostly informal than formal. A youth can regularly receive guidance, words of wisdom from his parents, family members or an elder in the society. However, when mentoring is being informal and unstructured, it's very difficult to assess and measure its effectiveness. I therefore believe that there is a need for more structured mentoring programs in Africa. These formalised mentoring program could be holistically integrated into high school and university curriculum so that no student can end his learning journey without being mentored.
Mentoring is a key missing component in most of the higher institutions of learning and even in the workplace. Developing a culture of mentoring will definitely contribute to leadership develop in Africa
