Editor's Notes
This presentation addresses leadership skills and what to expect in the decade (2011-2020) ahead. The belief is that small businesses will be the trend for US and the respect for networking and collaboration are threads to expect.
As leaders in this decade, we learn to make adjustments when a presentation is delivered. It is imperative to get introductions from those who attend to tailor the contents to that audience. Be sure to highlight 1 or 2 points you want to stress so recollection of the presentation is anchored on the challenge you present. This will develop strength for the presentation and shows value to those who attend. I always like to say that the meeting may not start on time, but rest assured, it will end on time. Keep track of your speaking slot with a digital clock by your side. Be cautious to not let time slip away without giving the audience ample time to participate with a question and answer session.
People like to know the speaker from a personal level. It is always a good idea to have a personal story that you want to express so there is a good way to connect with the audience from your own life’s experience. Set expectations about the presentation so the audience doesn’t feel the speaker is going to ramble on about personal stories. Be sure the story connects with the theme of the presentation. With this personal touch, there will be some need to add a sense of flexibility with the theme, but be sure you cover all of the points you want to make with the supportive materials provided.
We are moving towards a need to collaborate with partners who may have once been perceived as competitors. This becomes imperative for web optimization as you will want to establish many links with your website and social media connections. We will address a measurable ROI for marketing in another presentation, but this was introduced as a customer lifetime value. When you present, be sure to describe the like-minded people you sense will get value from this information.
Diversity to the networking events you attend will give you a broad perspective to different contacts and venues. You will want to see referrals from trusted resources, therefore a commitment to stay with a given networking group is valuable. Get contacts connected to your social media platform.
Networking is both a face-to-face event and an online group that enjoys blogs you write. Be sure to submit PDF articles with metatags added to the documents. Upload these to your social media sites.
Networking requires you to have a tag line. This should be 8 words or less. This is different from an elevator speech that describes why you are in business, what type of client you are seeking and what relevancy that has to the person you are speaking to. An elevator speech can be relayed in 1-2 minutes; whereas a tag line is merely 10-20 seconds.
The important question for a leader in the decade ahead is to be aware of your weaknesses and to find solutions quickly. This includes looking for the answer to this question: What do I not know about this tasks that I need to complete. You will find this in a business plan and on a regular basis. This was the leadership initiative challenge presented to the meeting attendees today and we received many interesting answers.
Giving a presentation is a common event for leaders. We provided tips for an effective presentation and we created the “What I do not know” challenge. We also touched on tag lines, which will be further explored in an upcoming BEConnects presentation. Our presentations are downloaded on the www.BEConnects.com/Leadership.html website in a PDF file. Good luck in your leadership development skills. If you have questions about this material, contact Sonja Onthank of OMG at 503-975-3684.
