In poor countries, life expectancy is often below 65 years of age. People die from infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, diarrhea, and cholera, as well as AIDS. It is scandalous that many of these diseases are treatable but too expensive. The World Trade Organization has prevented poor countries from producing cheaper generic drugs for AIDS to protect pharmaceutical patents. Meanwhile, over a billion people worry about getting enough to eat, while over a billion and a half worry about eating too much due to diseases of affluence like obesity, heart disease, aging-related illnesses, pollution-related cancers, and traffic accidents.
