In poor countries, life expectancy is often below 65 years of age. People die from infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, diarrhea, and cholera, as well as AIDS. It is scandalous that many of these diseases are treatable but cost too much. The World Trade Organization has prevented poor countries from producing cheaper generic drugs for AIDS in order to protect pharmaceutical patents. Meanwhile, over a billion people worry about getting enough to eat, while over 1.5 billion worry about eating too much due to obesity and other diseases common in wealthy nations.
