The Ghana Bamboo Bikes project aims to manufacture affordable bamboo bikes in Ghana to address unemployment, poverty, and rural-urban migration. It trains local youth to build high-quality bamboo bikes using abundant, sustainable local bamboo. The bikes are designed for Ghana's road conditions and exported internationally. The project creates jobs and livelihood skills while benefiting the environment and local economy through bamboo cultivation and bike production. So far it has trained 10 youth and established bamboo plantations with local communities.

3. BACKGROUND
The Ghana Bamboo bikes project is a student
led commitment project of the Clinton Global
Initiative University implemented by the
Bright Generation Community Foundation a
Ghanaian based non-profit committed to the
economic empowerment of the youth

4. The project aims at taking advantage of the
abundant bamboo raw materials in Ghana to
manufacture and assemble high quality
cheaper bamboo bikes in Ghana suitable for
the road conditions in Ghana that will also
be affordable to the poor.

5. The Ghana Bamboo Bikes is a socio ecological green
initiative that addresses the quadruple problems of
climate change, poverty, rural-urban migration and
high unemployment amongst the youth in rural
Ghana by creating employment opportunities and
sustainable livelihood job skills for the youth
through the building of high quality handcrafted
second generation bamboo bikes for the

7. As part of our contribution towards Youth
Employment Program and the Millennium
Development Goals, The Ghana Bamboo Bikes
shall offer basic course and practical lessons on
building bamboo bikes as a way of encouraging
entrepreneurship and providing sustainable
livelihood job skills for the youth of Ghana.

8. FACTS ABOUT BAMBOO BIKES
Bamboo bikes have great riding characteristics
due to bamboo's natural vibration-damping
qualities. The vibration damping is a
performance advantage on longer rides,
reducing fatigue and shock associated with
carbon frames. It is appropriate for racing and
for everyday use.

• Load bearing capacity: In terms of load bearing
capacity, a square inch of bamboo can carry a weight of
500 pounds, and its tensile strength is 28,000 Newton,
compared to 23,000 for steel and good vibration
