The retina contains 10 layers that are important for vision. The innermost layers include the inner limiting membrane and nerve fiber layer. The middle layers contain the ganglion cells, inner and outer plexiform layers, and inner nuclear layer. The outermost layers include the photoreceptor layer of rods and cones and the retinal pigment epithelium layer.
