Characteristics of Parallels or Latitudes
 All parallels are complete circles except 90 degree
North and 90 degree South, which are points.
 The equator is the largest parallel.
 All parallels are located at an equal distance from
each other.
 The equator is the only great circle while the other
parallels are all small circles.
 All these lines are parallel to equator that is why it is
also called as parallels.
Now have a look at diagram
If you have numbers in
negative it is in southern
hemisphere.
If you have numbers in
positive it is northern
hemisphere.
We can also write it as 30

14. LONGITUDE
CHARACTERISTICS OF LONGITUDES OR MERIDIANS
 The length of all the meridians is the same as each one is a
semi-circle.
 Any two opposite meridians, when taken together form a
complete circle, which is a great circle.
 All the meridians meet at the poles.
 East of the Prime Meridian upto 180 E is the Eastern
Hemisphere, whereas west of the Prime Meridian upto 180
W is the Western Hemisphere.
 As these lines taken prime meridian as base so these lines are
also called as Meridians.
