Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic illness spread by rodents in West Africa. It was first discovered in 1969 in Nigeria, where it has caused over 300,000 cases and 5,000 deaths. The Lassa virus is an arenavirus transmitted through contact with infected rodent urine or feces. It can also spread between humans through direct contact with bodily fluids. Treatment focuses on supportive care and the antiviral drug ribavirin.
