Nowadays, geographical coordinates (geo-tags), social annotations (tags), and low-level features are available in large image datasets. In our paper, we exploit these three kinds of image descriptions to suggest possible annotations for new images uploaded to a social tagging system. In order to compare the benefits each of these description types brings to a tag recommender system on its own, we investigate them independently of each other. First, the existing data collection is clustered separately for the geographical coordinates, tags, and low-level features. Additionally, random clustering is performed in order to provide a baseline for experimental results. Once a new image has been uploaded to the system, it is assigned to one of the clusters using either its geographical or low-level representation. Finally, the most representative tags for the resulting cluster are suggested to the user for annotation of the new image. Large-scale experiments performed for more than 400,000 images compare the different image representation techniques in terms of precision and recall in tag recommendation.

The US Geological Survey's National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC) currently hosts vector data themes (including elevation, hydrography, transportation, boundaries, structures, geographic names, and woodland tint) appropriate for cartographic display at approximately a 1:24,000-scale. NGTOC is evaluating methods to enable users to automatically filter the 1:24,000-scale data so that it may be appropriately used at smaller scales through database enrichment. A new attribute, named VisibilityFilter, is currently being evaluated which will tag each feature with an appropriate (smallest) scale-of-use. While the VisibilityFilter attribute will enable users to define the content appropriate at a target scale, the resulting content may still require geometric simplification for specific user needs. This presentation will define the VisibilityFilter attribute and demonstrate how it can be used.
We formulate and investigate the novel problem of finding the skyline k-tuple groups from an n-tuple dataset – i.e., groups of k tuples which are not dominated by any other group of equal size, based on aggregate-based group dominance relationship. The major technical challenge is to identify effective anti-monotonic properties for pruning the search space of skyline groups. To this end, we show that the anti-monotonic property in the well-known Apriori algorithm does not hold for skyline group pruning. We then identify order-specific property which applies to SUM, MIN, and MAX and weak candidate-generation property which applies to MIN and MAX only. Experimental results on both real and synthetic datasets verify that the proposed algorithms achieve orders of magnitude performance gain over a baseline method.
