2. How do homosexual male and women tv
hosts use their sexuality to affect the way
they talk and behave ?
3. Homosexual males are more likely to
use paralinguistic features (
gestures and facial expressions),
whilst women are going to be
much more reserved.
The prosodic features with the male hosts will vary
( tempo and pitch) throughout the conversation.
Fillers, repairs and back-channels will be
used more by the female host, men will
likely to be less common.
Female would be much more
masculine features such as, the lack
of using emotive language.
5. Ellen uses fillers straight away ,‘ er’ , when she begins her interview as well
as she stammered at the beginning of her question. Firstly being a women,
women are stereotypically known to think carefully about what their going
to say therefore she used fillers to allow her time to do so. Her sexuality
would have made her more aware of what to say as she didn't want to seem
too forceful or less compassionate.
Back-Channels are very frequent, ‘ hmm humm’ , these non-verbal
utterances are used to give feedback to the speaker that she is being
understood and listened too. As a women, she is more likely to be listening
and taking in what's said.
She uses hand gestures when she is asking the questions however when
she is listening, her posture is very calm.
6. Most of the features that are common to Ellen such as gestures,
non-fluency features and back-channels are stereotypically linked
with women.
She does not use her sexuality when interviewing or there are no
features that would identify her as homosexual.
Her behaviour, putting aside her language and mode, can be
considered masculine, as she does not have the hyper and bubbly
persona females, to add to this there are no overlaps or
interruption when she talks.
8. The prosodic feature of pitch increased during certain points of the interview
‘over the settee’ , this is used for exaggeration and homosexual men are likely to
raise their voice (pitch) during conversation as its seen as more feminin.
Alan carr uses a variety of facial expressions ‘ shocked’. And very obvious hand
gestures. Hand gestures whilst talking are more common with women plus the
fact that he expresses himself very openly is also not stereotypically linked with
males.
Alan carrs idiolect is very distinctive, he is very feminine as he uses phrases such
as ‘love’. To add to this, he is very open to talk or joke on the topic of sex ‘ is this
erotic for you’ Due to him being gay, this makes it a lot more acceptable for him
as it wont be seen as ‘ inappropriate’ instead as humorous.
Alan's behaviour is very exaggerated, with the way he says things and overall
behaviour
9. Alan carrs speech is major influenced by his sexuality, this is
because it adds to the humour of the show. Heterosexual males
are less likely to use hand gestures, facial expression and change
in pitch. These are all more features linked with women as him
being gay gives makes it more okay for him to play on this.
His idiolect is also influenced by him being gay as he can openly
talk about things in the sexual context.
Overall there are less masculine spoken language features or
characterises with Alan carr as his sexuality 100% affects what he
says and the way he behaves.
