DEFINITION
Language acquisition is the process by which
humans acquire the capacity to perceive and
comprehend language, as well as to produce and use
words and sentences to communicate.
IMPORTANCE
 Language is used to communicate feelings and
ideas as well as gaining information from the world
around us.
 Language helps form bonds between people
 Foundation of future communication abilities
 Learning a second language is easier to
accomplish as a child than as an adult
IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING A SECOND A
LANGUAGE
 Broadens your world view
 Develops intellect
 Helps to further understand your native language
 Develops respect for other cultures
 Builds trust between you and people who speak another
language
 Expands job opportunities
 English is no longer the first language majority in
America
 America is the only developed country where learning a
second language is optional
21ST CENTURY APPLICATION
 Today, a language must not only be taught but also
applied to a different subject in order to not only
memorize the language but also understand it.
 Language is taught to better understand and
appreciate other cultures and perspectives.
 Students are encouraged to use their knowledge of
the language not only inside the classroom but also
in real life situations.
 Today, language is taught in multiple ways
according to modern technology.
21ST CENTURY APPLICATION
 Language is taught to determine a student’s
potential rather than pointing out what they don’t
know.
 Learning a second language allows for personal
growth and multiple opportunities for exploration in
the future.
 Due to the changing ethnic makeup in America,
learning languages allows for less cultural
stereotyping and appreciation for different cultures.
EXAMPLE OF APPLICATION
 Incorporate using a second language by requiring
elementary students to make simple requests or
statements in that language.
 “May I go to the restroom?”
 “Hello, my name is…”
 “Good morning! How are you?”
 “How do you say…?”
ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY
 Learning programs that include games and
activities
 Watching movies or videos in a second language
 Learning songs
 Use Skype to communicate to others who speak a
foreign language
 Smart Board Activities
