Concept of truth.
This is shown in Chapter 1, when Haroun loses his temper
with his father and says to him, "What's the use of stories that
aren't even true?" This brings Rashid away from his magical
worlds and causes to him to lose the Gift of the Gab. This
tells us that we must be realistic. This theme is also shown in
Chapters 2 and 3, when Haroun and Rashid are escorted to
the Arabian Nights Plus One. The Dull Lake was affected by
their moods and changed accordingly. Haroun is reminded of
one of Rashid's stories, the Moody Land, which changes
according to the people's emotions. This is magical realism.
This was also shown in Chapter 4, when Harounrealises that
the Ocean is poisoned. Pollution is a very real problem in this
world too.
