"Is There Anybody Out There?" - Claire Beecroft, Luke Miller

This session includes case studies themes around the creation of online communities for learners. Claire Beecroft and Luke Miller (ScHARR) use their extensive experience of delivering distance learning courses to discuss what motivates students within an online learning environment, and how the development of ‘teacher immediacy behaviours’, and of innovative online pedagogy, can help to maintain establish and sustain genuine relationships between online learners and teachers. Sarah Moore and Layla Croll (Academic and Learning Services) will introduce colleagues to the skills of facilitating discussion among learners in an online environment such as a MOOC or a distance learning course. It will start with a short exercise that raises some of the challenges of facilitating discussion about experiences of working with learners from across the world on a MOOC.

Encore, the new name for Lecture Capture at the University, is a service that will be expanded and improved for the forthcoming term, further increasing consistency and accessibility for students through availability of recorded lectures. Creating Immersive VR Experiences
Virtual Reality offers the opportunity to create highly immersive experiences and can transport learners to different environments such that they genuinely feel like they are there. Already there are innovative examples of practice taking place across the institution. The cost to create and view these experiences, previously meant that this method of teaching has been limited to those with ample resources. In this session you will design a VR experience and discover how, with no technical expertise you can create Virtual Reality experiences for your students. You will also hear from students who have been creating VR experiences to educate others about their discipline.
The Crys-TEL Maze
The Crys-TEL maze requires attendees to complete a number of challenges in groups to attempt to figure out a pressing learning and teaching issue. Along the way, participants will experience different learning and delivery styles, with the aim of promoting appropriate use of technology, and take some ideas / information that they can feed into their teaching. Gamification Case Studies: Technology Enhanced Fieldwork
This session looks at case studies from colleagues using gamification in their work, among other innovative technologies. Stephen Davie and Greg Stewart (Careers) will demonstrate a suite of interactive material to engage students in the career planning process. Jessica Keen and Amy Mollekin (301: Student Skills and Development Centre) show how innovative technology has is being used to engage students with skills development opportunities, including a skills audit tool, and the pilot of the ‘Join Up Your Skills’ scavenger hunt-style app that will be launched in 2017/18. Olaf Scroth, Paul Buck and Thom White (Landscape) will demonstrate the use of 360 degree cameras and drones to create walk-throughs of landscape sites, and the online “treasure hunt” app Actionbound, to further enhance understanding.

This practical session looks at using different tools and approaches for creating content in learning and teaching. David Read (English Language Teaching Centre) will look at a variety of tools, ranging from the simple to the complex, for helping to flip your learning, including Office Mix, Edpuzzle, Articulate Storyline 2 and Camtasia. Andy Tattersall looks at making short video collections to support learning and research, showing that making quick, low-budget video and animation collections can be used to inform learners and academics. Finally James Pearson (Faculty of Arts & Humanities) will demonstrate how Microsoft Sway was used by students to create, collaborate, share and present their digital artefacts created during ThinkCreate, the Arts & Humanities Faculty Challenges.

Stephen Davie and Greg Stewart (Careers) will demonstrate a suite of interactive material to engage students in the career planning process. Jessica Keen and Amy Mollekin (301: Student Skills and Development Centre) show how innovative technology has is being used to engage students with skills development opportunities, including a skills audit tool, and the pilot of the ‘Join Up Your Skills’ scavenger hunt-style app that will be launched in 2017/18. Olaf Scroth, Paul Buck and Thom White (Landscape) will demonstrate the use of 360 degree cameras and drones to create walk-throughs of landscape sites, and the online “treasure hunt” app Actionbound, to further enhance understanding.

Creating Content Practicals - David Read
Part of the Creating Content Practicals presentations.
This practical session looks at using different tools and approaches for creating content in learning and teaching. David Read (English Language Teaching Centre) will look at a variety of tools, ranging from the simple to the complex, for helping to flip your learning, including Office Mix, Edpuzzle, Articulate Storyline 2 and Camtasia. Andy Tattersall looks at making short video collections to support learning and research, showing that making quick, low-budget video and animation collections can be used to inform learners and academics. Finally James Pearson (Faculty of Arts & Humanities) will demonstrate how Microsoft Sway was used by students to create, collaborate, share and present their digital artefacts created during ThinkCreate, the Arts & Humanities Faculty Challenges.
