The Red Fort in Delhi was commissioned in 1638 by Shah Jahan as the royal palace of the Mughal empire. It took 10 years to complete and became the residence of the royal family. The architecture represents the zenith of Mughal creativity under Shah Jahan. Today it is a popular tourist site where the Indian prime minister gives an annual speech on Independence Day, but some buildings and features are in need of restoration. Security is tightened around the fort especially on Independence Day to prevent terrorist threats.
