Action Planning: Applying Your LFP Experience in Your
Country
OVERVIEW
The Legislative Fellows Program for Pakistan (LFP) begins with a one month fellowship experience in
the U.S.,but this is only building the foundation for the long-term purpose of LFP. The impact of LFP is
determined by how you apply this experience once you return to your country.
Three questions to help you think about applying your LFP experience
1. How will you share your experience with others once you return to your country?
2. How will you continue your involvement and collaboration with your U.S. and regional
colleagues that you established in the U.S.?
3. How will you utilize your new knowledge and skills to promote positive change in your
community?
ACTION PLANNING
Action planning is a tool you can use to develop a plan to apply your LFP experience once you return to
your country. An Action Plan is a series of tasks to carry out in order to achieve an objective that
contributes to a greater goal.
Effective Action Plans are SMART:
Follow Steps 1 – 9 below to develop your Action Plan. This template can be used to revisit your Plan
once you have returned to your country, and can be modified or expanded upon as you accomplish your
goals. Please note the below deadlines.
Steps 1-3: Prior to arrival in the U.S. (yellow highlighted responses)
Steps 4-5: October 25,2015 (blue highlighted responses)
Steps 6-7: November 1,2015 (green highlighted responses)
2
Step 1: Define: What is your project idea? (define = (a.) to state or describe the nature
scope of meaning of b.) mark out the boundary or limits)
Please describe your project idea here
Understanding Legislative Processes and Public Policy Development and Analysis: “Developing
Advocacy and Campaign Strategy and Action Planning for public advocacy on improved food
fortification and Nutrition through legislation in Pakistan”.
There is lack of legislation, public policies and their implementation in Pakistan on food
fortification and Nutrition. There is urgent need to have laws, legislation and public policies in
food fortification and nutrition. There is urgent need to have situation analysis and nutrition and
food fortification policy landscape analysis in Pakistan for assessing and analyzing the potential
key bureaucratic actors and institutions which may be influenced for taking policy actions and
reforms for nutrition and food fortification in Pakistan.
The overall objective of proposed follow-on project is “to influence policy makers and
parliamentarians for formulation and implementation of public policies and legislationfor making
nutrition and food fortification mandatory in Pakistan.
Therefore, for achieving the overall Goal of proposed follow-on project, efforts will be made to
identify and influence policy makers and parliamentarians through evidence based public
advocacy. We will make efforts to have desk reviews, situation analysis and policy analysis (if any
existing) for designing concrete public advocacy and campaign strategy and action planning for
achieving the results and scaling up impact. Up to date analysis on the context for public policy
making will provide us overall picture of existing laws and policies and then major
implementation level gaps.
We will undertake situation analysis and nutrition and food fortification policy landscapeanalysis
and stakeholders mapping using qualitative research findings (interviews and FGDs).This includes
undertaking stakeholder mapping processes to understand the motivations, powers, networks
and mindset of national, sub-national and local policy makers and practitioners associated with
the food fortification and nutrition issues in Pakistan. We will developing and produce advocacy
asks/messages based on recommendations retrieved from qualitative research on means to
reduce barriers through communication.
Step 2: Why does this matter?
What are some reasons why you want to implement this project idea? Why is it important for your
country or community? What are some facts or statistics that support why this issue should be addressed.
Please share this information below.
3
1. TheNational Nutrition Survey indicated that 58% of households inPakistan were food insecure,
with hunger at nearly 30% across Pakistan. Undernutrition in Pakistan is strongly correlated to
poverty. For example, children from households in the lowest income quintile were twice as likely
to be underweight than children from the highest income quintile.
2. Therefore, it is important in my country to undertake policy advocacy work on nutrition and
food fortification through policy legislation and implementation.
3.As my profession is policy advocacy and current LFP is adherence with it, thereby, I will
implement this project idea.
Step 3: Project Goal: In one sentence clearly state the long-term goal of the project
Write your project goal here
The long-term goal of the project is mentioned below;
“To influence policy makers and parliamentarians for formulation and implementation of policy
and legislation for making nutrition and food fortification mandatory in Pakistan”.
I like this idea a lot! You clearly are passionate about the subject and I can tell you have put effort into
this.

These are good! You have clearly put a lot of thought into this and are making detailed steps towards
achieving your goal. The steps you have mapped out do not end up getting you to your end goal though,
have you thought about what you would do next?
Step 5: Challenges & Solutions: What are some challenges youmay face?
How will you overcome them?
List out 2-3 challenges you anticipate occurring when you implement this project. Then, for each
challenge, brainstorm a potential, realistic solution,
1. Challenge: Availability of authentic and updated information and data on nutrition and food
fortification policy and legislation
Solution: Extensive coordination will made with potential nutrition experts and legislators
for knowing about policy landscape of nutrition and food fortification in Pakistan.
2. Challenge: Busy work schedule of key informants and legislators may delay in meeting the
deadline of activity
Solution: Efforts will be made to contact with media, lawyers and local legislators for reaching
national level government stakeholders and legislators for semi-structured interviews.
3. Challenge: Lack of cooperation from American professionals regarding getting technical
backstop pertaining with successfulaccomplishment of activities.
Solution: Close ties will be made with relevant American professionals so that they may
provide me technical backstop for the successfulaccomplishment of project.
Step 6: Could an American professionalsupport your project?
Could your fellowship mentor or another American professional that you met at a meeting or event
contribute to the implementation of your project if they travel to your country?
❏ Yes
❏ No
If yes, how so? They may provide us technical support through correspondence preferably email
communication.
Please provide the name(s) and contact information of American(s) that could potentially contribute to
your project:

Step 7: Executive Summary of Project
Now that you have completed the action planning process you should have developed a clear project idea
as well as the action steps you will need to take in order to successfully complete it. Please write below a
final description of your project (1 paragraph) and the important steps that you will take in order to
implement it (1 paragraph). Be specific!

  • 1. Action Planning: Applying Your LFP Experience in Your Country OVERVIEW The Legislative Fellows Program for Pakistan (LFP) begins with a one month fellowship experience in the U.S.,but this is only building the foundation for the long-term purpose of LFP. The impact of LFP is determined by how you apply this experience once you return to your country. Three questions to help you think about applying your LFP experience 1. How will you share your experience with others once you return to your country? 2. How will you continue your involvement and collaboration with your U.S. and regional colleagues that you established in the U.S.? 3. How will you utilize your new knowledge and skills to promote positive change in your community? ACTION PLANNING Action planning is a tool you can use to develop a plan to apply your LFP experience once you return to your country. An Action Plan is a series of tasks to carry out in order to achieve an objective that contributes to a greater goal. Effective Action Plans are SMART: Follow Steps 1 – 9 below to develop your Action Plan.
