Witchcraft & witch hunts
Early Christian views did not believe in witches, but persecution began in the 1200s led by Pope Innocent III and Thomas Aquinas. Witch interrogations often involved torture and examining women's bodies for signs of witchcraft. Witches were seen as sexual deviants conspiring in secret societies, and helping/healing neighbors, which threatened the church. Between 1400-1700, an estimated 80,000-100,000 witches were killed in Europe, mostly women. The Salem Witch Trials in 1692 saw 19 people hanged and over 200 imprisoned on witchcraft charges. Modern witchcraft is now practiced as a religion by some.
