WHAT IS MEDIATION?

Mediation is a way to solve conflicts
effectively without having to impose a penalty
WHO ARE WE?

 We are a group of teachers and students who have received
formation by “Institut per la Convivència i Èxit Escolar”

 Teachers meet once a week to prepare training sessions for
new students, to discuss conflicts and try to find a solution or
operate on the most difficult cases.
TRAINING

 We had training throughout the course 2007-08 and 2009-10
by the trainers of “Institut de la Conviviència i Èxit Escolar”

 Form the course 2010-11 onwards experienced teachers and
students give the training for new ones.
HOW DO WE DO IT?

 We devote eight hours throught the academic year to this
education and we deal with practical activities to teach
techniques of mediation to new students.

 We also introduce the students of first cicle of ESO to
mediation techniques during the first term of the year.
HOW DO WE GET TO MEDIATION?
DISSEMINATION
 INNER DISSEMINATION:
 Presentation of the Project to all the students in the school
      in September
 Presentation of the Project to all the tutors
 OUTER DISSEMINATION:
 Visits to the Primary Schools of the area to explain them
the mediation Project, specially to the students of 6th grade
that are coming to our high school the following year.
 We attended the Congreso de Convivencia y Participación
del Entorno Educativo (Palma de Mallorca, 27/10/2010)
HOW DO WE DEAL WITH A MEDIATION?

 The most common case is a conflict or misunderstanding
beween two students.

 The mediation is made without the presence of any teacher.
Teachers are only present in very difficult cases.
HOW DO WE DO A MEDIATION?
 STEPS
 The students with the conflict meet two mediator students
 They introduce themselves and welcome each other
   Rules are explained
   Disputants explain what happened
 We help each party “to be in each other’s shoes”
 The students in conflict give possible solutions to the problem
 A fortnight later a revision is made to check on the students
    in conflict
THE FUTURE

What we intend to do:

 Keep on training more students to become mediatiors

 Keep on doing mediations

 Make advances in the mediation culture in our high school
