L3 Unit 67 3D Animation Evaluation - Partial
HA12 – Marionette
20th April 2015 – 19th June 2015
In this latest projectI had to become a 3D animator whosejob is to interpret a
games artist’s vision for a character or an object and build the
poses/actions/motions required within the gameplay. So the technical team
can fit the animation into the game.
As a freelance games designer I need to demonstrate my knowledgeof the
entire production process, regardless of which area becomes my specialism. To
develop my portfolio in preparation for higher education or employment, I am
going to design a collision-based object sequenceusing the animation
techniques introduced to me in the given NewTek LightWavetutorials by 3D
Garage. I am allowed to usefound assets, thosethat I have created myself or a
combination of both.
My plan to create a 3D animation within the briefs requirements I started a
schedule and whatI needed to create when and how. The schedule had a
target and I would do my best to fulfil the schedules target requirements. After
the schedulewas complete I started research until I decided to either make a
run animation cycle, or to make a Collison event, while run cycles are harder,
collision events do not always work theintended way, so I had to make a
choice. After carefulconsideration I decided to make a collision event after I
make a storyboard for each, as the collision event storyboard and mind map
was more interesting and morefun to make.
I then started to create the 3D animation, while in NewTeks modeler to create
planets, suns and moons, for my collision event. After finding royalty free
textures for these many planets, a sun and a few moon, (even a few small
asteroids), all different to the next.
The 3D animation did take longer than intended due to many problems in
Layout, mostly the fracturetool not working, butI eventually got it to work -
After a very long time and many attempts- I created a video for it which takes
many hours due to rendering frameby frame.
To make suremy work was fineI had to check decency, representation of race,
gender religion and sexuality was fine and met an appropriate standard. By

filling out an ethical/Health and safety form, and signing it, scanning it into
Photoshop to upload to my blog.
After filling this out and uploading it online, only my production log and
evaluation remained, by now week by week updates the production log was
complete with not much to add to it, so I uploaded that too.
I know in my production that there are many faults, due to someof human
errors and some due to layout, but I havefound other ways around them, to
fix or to ignore and hope it is still a good production.
For instance; the camera angles have to be moving otherwiseyou can see the
textures that do not perfectly it the planets, otherwisea static camera on a
slow rotating planet would give it an unrealistic touch, I can fix this by getting it
a new texture that fits or a UV map it more correctly in Modeler.
My finished video is a lot different than my initial storyboard dueto the
storyboard given times are too fastand you would see mostly a blurry screen,
If I did that, but I didn’t slow it down as this would make the animation too
long and not be focused on the collision event. Maybenext time I can pay
more attention to how long a frame to a second is.
I wasn’table to keep up with the schedule due to modeler and layout not
correctly using the fracturetool, since every time I used it in layout the
fractureobject would delete itself for an unknown reason, I was never able to
fix this.
I believe even with these faults that my production and work is still quite good
in terms of the briefs requirements and the entire length of my production is a
good stand point on that. Since it isn’t too long and it isn’t too short, it has
enough of an introduction and has enough time to view the collision event.
I also believe that my idea is original and quiet big on a scaleon size too, given
the actual sizeof the models, and are nearly to scale to real life solar system. It
is quite a creative idea as solar systems is always said in movies and games, but
never seen, and this is my attempt at it.
My production is always good as involving 8 planets, a moon and a sun, with all
different royalty free textures, takes some time. And then UV mapping them in
Modeler, and then making surethey are okay and no problems when moving

the object. Also giving them sometexture on the inside when that fractures
too.
To make sureI me the briefs requirements I wentback to it every time I
started and completed a task to make sureit was correct. If I didn’tdo this I
could’veended up with some serious backlog as I would need to redo the
whole projectif even the research was done wrong.
In conclusion, I learned many 3D animating techniques in LightWave Layout
while sharpening my skills in Modeler. I am now sureI am able to create a 3D
animation following industry practice.
