Simon Knight, a LEARN Visiting Scholar from the University of Technology Sydney, will introduce a variety of projects, including their work developing analytics to support student writing.

About Simon Knight
Simon Knight is a lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney in the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. His research investigates how people find and evaluate evidence, particularly in the context of learning and educator practices. Dr Knight received his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Leeds before completing a teacher education program and Philosophy of Education MA at the UCL Institute of Education. Following teaching high school social sciences, Dr Knight completed an MPhil in Educational Research Methods at Cambridge, and PhD in Learning Analytics at the UK Open University.
About Simon’s Talk
How do we make use of data about our students to support their learning, and where does learning analytics fit into that? Educators are increasingly asked to work with data and technologies such as learning analytics to support and provide evidence of student learning. However, what learning analytics developers should design for, and how educators will implement analytics, is unclear. Learning analytics risks the same levels of low uptake and implementation as many other educational technologies if they do not align with educator practice and needs. How then do we tackle this gap, to support and develop technologies that are implemented in practice, for impact on learning?
At the University of Technology Sydney, we have taken a participatory design based approach to designing and implementing learning analytics in practice, and understanding their impact. In our work we have identified existing practices with which learning analytics may be aligned to augment them. This talk introduces some of these projects, particularly drawing on our work in developing analytics to support student writing (writing analytics), giving examples of how analytics were aligned with existing pedagogic practices to support learning. Through this augmentation, supported by design-based approaches, we argue we can develop research and practice in tandem.
This workshop presents a recently developed mechanism for quantitative assessment of community-based learning, called the Community-Based Learning (CBL) Scorecard. Facilitators will reflect on the development of the CBL Scorecard by their Teagle-funded Consortium of liberal arts schools as an effort to promote assessment that improves student learning, with an instrument that employs a quantitative scale. Though the grant has concluded, the consultant had previously had capacity to allow for benchmarking across participating institutions. The workshop will include Q&A sessions about how the Scorecard provides a meaningful tool for assessing student learning and a brainstorming session about how the Scorecard can be applied at participant institutions to improve student learning and the teaching of CBL courses. The Scorecard will be shared via hard copy or drop box, and if participants find it useful, please keep facilitators informed so future use can be further explored. THANK YOU!

Martha Kyrillidou led the team that reconceptualized part of the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks as
a Student Success Center; during the pandemic we developed a programmatic approach to the Student Success Center
after numerous conversations and focus groups with potential stakeholders. Identifying “light” as an attractive element for
the student success center, we focused on ensuring a light-filled floor houses important academic services and other
student support services with a shared vested interest in its success. In addition to the campus research and the space
assessment, we designed a staffing model for the area. The project included space analysis and focus groups and
interviews with 20-30 academic support units in order to prioritize their presence in the student success center. Currently,
the space has been cleared from collections and is ready to bid for construction.

32. Noel Wien Public Library, Fairbanks, Alaska
Noel Wien Public Library is the main public library in Fairbanks serving about 100,000 people in the furthest northern city a
commercial airline flies within the United States. The consultants were asked to create an innovative conceptual plan for
renovating the existing space to enable the library to foster creativity and learning and to meet the library and information
needs of the Fairbanks Borough residents well into the future. The renovation plan did not include any expansion but the
reconceptualization of the existing space. It is currently slotted for implementation by Noel Wien Burrough in Fairbanks. The
goal is to transform the library facility into a dynamic center of community life.

■ Hannah Chen embodies the successful entrepreneurial
researcher. She shapes her own career and research,
flexibly pursuing opportunities as she chooses. Part of
her edge comes from her personal willingness to follow
new paths to her own development as a scholar, while
she also demonstrates the benefits of canny
partnerships with other researchers.

■ Hannah Chen is one of the lucky few who has persisted
in crafting a career as a researcher. Her ability to
“follow the money” to clients who can support her rather
mundane research projects, combined with her skill in
fostering personal relationships with other researchers,
has allowed her to craft a niche to support her research
activities, although not to fully develop her research
interests.

Disciplines in Charge
■ Hannah Chen has found success by aligning herself with
an emergent disciplinary research organization. She has
leveraged her research skills, not in service of the
discipline that trained her, but to play a leadership role in
developing the research technologies that underpin
another domain’s research program.

■ Hannah Chen’s career has unfolded along somewhat
traditional lines, while also tracking the shifting directions
of the North American research enterprise. Throughout
her development as a researcher, she has successfully
aligned her research interests with the shifting grand
research challenges identified by large-scale funding and
leveraged emerging sources of research data. As a
consequence, by 2030 her institutional allegiances have
migrated beyond the borders of the US and Canada,
although advances in technology and shifting cultural
norms allow her to continue to live in North America.
