Whangateau Catchment Assessment, Rodney District Council (2008-2009): A Catchment-based
assessment of the existing landscapes surrounding the scenic Whangateau Harbour, including a
consideration of social-demographic and cultural influences in providing recommendations for the
future management of the catchment area.
Whenuapai-Hobsonville-Westgate Triangle, Waitakere City Council (2010): Background investigations
into a concept for a green corridor approach to the future development of the land area created to
the north of SH16, and partially bounded by the inner Waitemata Harbour. A concept plan was
prepared following the input of a team of specialist ecologists, which focused on consolidating and
enhancing the natural terrestrial, marine and aquatic habitats of the site into a framework for future
development.
Anzac Road, Pukekohe, Development Area Plan Development (2010-2011): Subdivision development
area plans were developed under the North Pukehoe Hill Structure Plan Area for existing rural farm
properties on the northern slopes of Pukekohe Hill. The scheme plan incorporated existing vegetation
along with proposed structural planting to achieve a transitional semi-rural settlement style on the
borders of the existing Pukekohe township.
Tinopai Lands Coastal Subdivision Ecological Peer Review (2012/13): An ecological peer review
assessment of a proposed comprehensive residential subdivision for coastal lands at Tinopai,
undertaken on behalf of Kaipara District Council – currently awaiting Council Hearing.
Cremorne Street Pergola Herne Bay – Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (2012): Assessment of
a proposed pergola structure on a private Herne Bay residence, addressing potential views from the
Waitemata Harbour. Council consent was granted in 2012.
Wainui Interchange Landscape Assessment (2010): A landscape and visual assessment of a proposed
realignment of an existing interchange with SH1 at Wainui, as part of the proposed development of
Silverdale
Kopuku Road, Maramarua, Poultry Shed Extension (2012): A landscape and visual assessment of a
proposed extension of an existing commercial poultry farm operation at Maramarua, in accordance
with Council regulations surrounding this controlled activity.
Awards
NZILA Charlie Challenger Supreme Award 2007 for ‘Restoring Our Native Plants, (Manukau City
Council).

PROFILE
Originating from the UK, Kerstie has been in professional practice for over 10 years. Kerstie specialises in
combining her foundations in ecology with environmental landscape planning and design. She has a
background in large-scale environmental assessment and planning work for major infrastructure
projects within Europe, including for highways, rail and waterways.
Working for Boffa Miskell Ltd since her move to New Zealand in 2004, Kerstie has honed her skills in
landscape ecology, working with the New Zealand environment for a number of restoration and design
projects. The Restoration Planting Guidelines which Kerstie developed for Manukau City Council won
Boffa Miskell the Charlie Challenger Supreme Award from the NZILA in 2007. Her other areas of expertise
include preparing environmental impact assessments, alongside the development of landscape and
environmental management strategies and administering their practical implementation. She has
sound graphic and written communication skills, which include the preparation and presentation of
evidence for Council and Court hearings.
Working for a diverse range of clients, Kerstie operates well as part of a multi-disciplinary team as well as
a project manager. Kerstie’s particular interests lie in innovative design and research within the fields of
sustainable rural land management, urban ecology and environmental accounting.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Te Arai Coastal Settlement, Mangawhai (2004-2012): Landscape and visual assessment of an existing
plantation forest site on a former backdune, leading to the development of landscape-ecological-
planting and conservation strategies for proposed residential development in the context of this
sensitive and valued coastal environment.
SH1 Alpurt B2 Northern Gateway Alliance, NZ (2004): Landscape ecologist to the development of
environmental design and restoration proposals for the extension of SH1 from Orewa to Puhoi by
Transit. Extensive environmental investigations were involved to provide innovative solutions to meet
with environmental compliance, through a sequence of sensitive environments including native forest,
stream and estuarine habitats.
Manukau Citywide Restoration Planting Guidelines (2005-2007): Guidelines for a planting restoration
manual for MCC covering the whole of the Manukau City District, based on original patterns of
indigenous vegetation. Research for this document involved extensive reviews of existing vegetation
surveys and GIS mapping in tandem with field verification surveys. (Published, 2007).
Olympic Park Stream Restoration (2005): Restoration planting plan for a section of the Avondale
stream as part of a masterplan for the regeneration of Olympic Park, Avondale. The stream, which
has been colonised by herbaceous and woody weeds, was to be restored with native floodplain
species, in association with enabling access to this resource for public users of the Park.
Hobsonville Sustainable Development Framework 2005-2006: Preparation of a Sustainable
Development Framework for development of the former Hobsonville Aerodrome by Housing New
Zealand. Ecological indicators and targets were proposed for the development in order to meet the
environmental objectives of the wider project vision.
Mellons Bay Walkway Esplanade Planting (2005): Design and implementation of streamside planting
for a residential recreational walkway extension to an existing reserve in Howick, for Manukau City
Council.
Pegasus New Town Eastern Conservation Management Area (2006): Comprehensive planting
proposals for 96ha coastal lowland conservation area associated with Pegasus New Town in
Christchurch. Work included contract documentation for plant supply and site preparation, involving
existing waterways, created wetlands and coastal forest.
Long Bay Development (2007): Concept planting design and management proposals for reserve sites
within the proposed Long Bay Development, North Shore City, including extensive wetland habitat
creation.
Dunedin Landscape Management Area Review (2007): Citywide Landscape Character Assessment,
incorporating management strategies for important ecological and heritage features and areas.
Presented to Council as an interim report with recommendations to inform future policy and proposed
management areas.
Lucas Creek Stream Restoration (2007): An options and issues study with BECA Infrastructure, for the
future management of the Lucas Creek, within the rapidly developing context of Albany, North Shore
City. The ecological components of the study looked at options for the practical management of the
stream, based on habitat restoration and planting solutions to stabilise stream banks within the public
realm.
Pokeno Growth Boundaries (2007): Ecological evaluation of the area proposed for the Pokeno
Structure Plan in Franklin, based on natural patterns and features including vegetation cover and
drainage to inform the extent of future growth.
Silverdale North Precincts Habitat Assessments (2007): Field assessments for existing habitats within the
proposed residential precincts of the Silverdale North Structure Plan for WHF Properties Ltd.
Vegetation surveys were conducted according to RDC guidelines and regional strategies to establish
habitat values and significance.
Overseas Investment Office Applications, Hahei-Coromandel and Bream Tail, Rodney, (2007):
Feasibility studies, on behalf of potential overseas buyers, investigating the potential to provide
recognised environmental and public benefits resulting from the purchase and development of a
given site and location.
Conservation Lot Audits, Rodney & Franklin District Council (ongoing since 2007): A series of ecological
audits relating to successive conservation lot subdivisions were undertaken for either Councils since
2007 until the formation of Auckland Council. Proposed applications were assessed under the specific
criteria of separate conservation lot subdivision rules for each district. Audits involved making
recommendations on the legitimacy of proposed conservation lots as well as occasional attendance
at Council hearings.
Beachlands Structure Plan, Maukau City (2005-2010): Scoping assessment of Landscape and visual
effects for the potential development of the Beachlands Structure Plan for Manukau City Council,
involving presentation of findings for community consultation and input to design recommendations
for proposed structure plan zones. Follow up work for Council in 2010 to assess the proposed structure
plan design.
Rotoroa Island Restoration, Hauraki Gulf (2007-2009): Design and preliminary supervision of
comprehensive native restoration plantings in conjunction with the rehabilitation of the former
Salvation Army facility for public recreation. A diversity of vegetation types will be established on the
island over a five year implementation period, based on predicted indigenous vegetation patterns
within the Hauraki Gulf.
Lion Rock Assessment of Ecological Effects (2007-2008): Co-ordination of a comprehensive ecological
AEE for a proposed residential golf course development on the Pererua Peninsula, Bay of Islands,
involving a suite of terrestrial, aquatic and wildlife investigations. Guidelines on Landscape
Management and Ecological Conservation formed the basis to providing mitigation to the proposed
development as part of an integrated design approach involving stormwater engineers, hydrologists,
archaeologists, architects, geotechnical engineers and golf course designers.
Moores Bay Development, Kawau Island (2007-2008): Co-ordination of an AEE for a private residential
subdivision scheme on zoned land at the head of the Bon Accord Harbour. The proposed
development was centred around the minimisation of vegetation clearance for building platforms
alongside enhancement of the harbour edge and interior waterways.
Papakura Stream Assessment, Auckland Regional Council (2008): Catchment-based landscape
appraisal of the Papakura Stream, involving the characterisation of its forested rural headwaters in the
Hunua Ranges through urban Manurewa and the Manukau Harbour. This study formed part of a suite
of ecological investigations of the Papakura Stream, the findings of which were published by the ARC
as a technical paper.
Waimauku Structure Plan, Rodney District Council (2008): Landscape-based assessment of the area
containing the rural settlement of Waimauku, situated on the fringes of west Auckland. The study was
used, alongside other specialist reports, to devise potential layouts for a proposed structure plan for
the town’s future development in collaboration with Rodney District Council, as a basis for public
consultation.
Kelly Park Studios Plan Change, Wainui (2008): A private Plan Change sought by existing filmmakers,
Kelly Park Studios, for the expansion of filming activities within a rural property in Rodney District. The
study involved comprehensive recommendations for the management of the site as a filming facility
alongside the protection and conservation of both rural amenity and ecological values.
Auckland Isthmus Landscape Analysis and Heritage Mapping, Auckland City Council (2008):
Investigative studies of the Auckland Isthmus landscape involving extensive GIS mapping and analysis.
The interpretative mapping produced through these successive studies was to form the basis of policy
development for the new City Plan.
