Editor's Notes
Good evening and welcome to the carrollwood elementary PTA event. My name is Kristy Souverain and tonight I will be reviewing our state standardize testing scores with you and show how we are working as a school to constantly improve.
Just a quick note that Carrollwood elementary has earned an A grade from the state in the past 5 years and hope to continue to keep the A grade.
As we dive into the data, I wanted to start with our Reading scores. With reading being such an important skill across all subject areas, we are pleased to see a growth under our school column from the 2012 data to the 2013 data by 3%. You will notice a drop from the 2011 data to the 2012 data, keeping in mind that this was the year of the FCAT 2.0 implementation. The district average also experienced a significant drop that same year. The Test became more difficult for students to earn a 3 or better. We are constantly working to ensure our students are making gains in reading. All teachers are required to attend common core trainings along with other whole staff trainings to be in touch with the latest teaching strategies to ensure your students are successful.
Last year 68% of our students scored a 3 or better on the FCAT math. This was the same percentage in the previous year. You can see the substantial drop from 2011 data with a score of 86% to the 2012 scores of a 68 %. This is a 14 % difference. As noted on the chart with a red line, this was the year the state developed and administered the FCAT 2.0 assessment. The test was more difficult and thus could have created a drop in many scores across the district. You can see even the district average went from a 72 % at a 3 or above to a 57% at a 3 or above. This is a 15 % difference. Our goal will be to push the math intensity in all grade levels and offer support to our teachers to improve the resources available to our students. We are implementing some vertical planning as well to ensure all students are being challenged and remediate as needed.
At the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year our staff looked at the 2011 and 2012 scores and saw a drop in the percentage of students making a 3 or better on the science FCAT. Teachers did some vertical planning as well as focus on specific science curriculum and planning improvements to help our students make gains in this area. We used non-fiction resources and started implementing close reading lessons to further our science investigations in the classroom. This method was proven effective as our 2013 results show an 8% gain. We look forward to keeping up the improvements and continuing to be well above our district average.
Last school year 74 percent of our students earned a satisfactory grade or above which was 7 points higher than the district average. In 2012, however, 89 percent of our students earned a satisfactory grade or above . This drop could have been a result of higher expectations. Students must have earned a 3.5 compared to a 3.0 in previous years. The expectations within the writing also changed and students were expected to master specific content that they may not have need to demonstrate in previous years. Even though our school has been above the district average with students that score a satisfactory range or above, we are working on improving our own score. This is an area that our school has made a focus and will work within all grade levels to ensure students are reaching for success.
Thank you very much for attending our PTA event tonight. I have included two websites for you. Our Florida Department of education website where you can find information about testing and school grades. I also included our Common Core standards website where you can find our state standards for all grade levels. My information is also included if you need to reach me with any questions or concerns that you might have. Thank you!
