MSL Germany Public Affairs Survey 2014 - Synopsis in EnglishMSL Germany
For the thirteenth consecutive year, MSL Germany interviewed public affairs professionals from leading companies and industry federations. The questionnaire was sent to more than 300 experts with about sixty replies being received.
“One year after the federal elections, we present the views and thoughts of leading German lobbyists about the new government’s work and some of the latest trends in political communications” says Axel Wallrabenstein, Chairman of MSLGROUP Germany. “With our Public Affairs Survey, we provide comprehensive insight into the perception of public affairs professionals in Germany.”
This document summarises the most important results. The complete survey is available in German on our website (www.mslgroup.de).
Three key points for news and media in 2018
1) Distributed discovery increasingly important, and social and search expose people to more sources of news, but brand recognition is low
2) Confidence in both social media and news media is low and people’s sense of what constitutes “fake news” is not what you think it is
3) The role of platforms is evolving as social media remains critical fr news but we see a shift to more ‘private’ messaging apps (is voice next?)
The 2017 Digital News Report surveyed 70,000 people across 36 markets on five continents to provide new insights into our digital news consumption. This research is a reminder that the digital revolution is full of contradictions and exceptions. These differences are captured in individual country pages that can be found towards the end of the report. They contain critical industry context written by experts as well as key charts and data points.
The report explores news consumption in: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
As well as country-by country analysis, the report also contains an essay by Melissa Bell, Publisher and Co-founder of Vox Media and an executive summary by Lead Author Nic Newman. Brute force effects of mass media presence and social media activity on elect...Marko Kovic

In this study, we analyze whether the mere volume of presence in mass media and the mere volume of activity on social media conveys advantages to candidates in parliamentary elections. Based on the theoretical model of bounded rationality, we call these potential effects \textit{brute force effects}. During the last month of the election campaign of the Swiss general election of 2015, we have tracked the presence of all 873 candidates from the canton of Zurich in a broad sample of mass media as well as their activity on Facebook and Twitter. The results of our multilevel Bayesian estimates show that neither direct activity on social media nor indirect resonance on social media has substantial effects. Mass media presence, in contrast, has consistent small, but substantial effects. Our results suggest that the brute force effect of mass media presence can have a tangible impact, but only a small one.
On 31 January 2017, Ipsos held a major debate where we dissected the momentous political events of 2016 and looked forward to key elections in 2017. Our high profile pollsters from around the world examined political discontent and uncertainty, the key forces that are driving it and where in the world it is most prevalent and why. The panel included experts on the political context and public opinion in Britain, France, Italy, the US, Canada and South Africa, providing a wide range of perspectives on the key political challenges of our time.
The Reuters Institute's South Africa Digital News Report 2019 was published on Wednesday, based on a survey of more than 2,000 online.• More than two-thirds (70%) are concerned about what is real and what is fake online.

This presentation tries to answer the question: Are beneficial, happy accidents – serendipity – more likely to occur among more participatory Internet users? And among users with larger and more diverse social networks as well as more trust? It derives a research framework to relate digital serendipity, online trust, and participation on the Internet.
The latest World Press Trends report shows that business sentiment in the industry has taken a downturn, in a context where multiple challenges face news publishers around the world. Yet there are causes for optimism, as revenue diversification progresses and publishers double down on new revenue sources and editorial products.
This year’s World Press Trends study makes for a sobering read after the optimism of our previous report. The mood in the industry has changed, and publishers find themselves in a more unpredictable business environment due to a number of challenges, including high levels of inflation, rising paper and print costs, as well as ongoing changes to advertising markets.
The change in business sentiment is one of the main findings of the new World Press Trends Outlook report. As in the previous years, the analysis is based on an online survey distributed to industry leaders. 167 news executives from 62 countries took part in the survey in Fall 2022 – a big thank you to them for sharing their insights, results and strategies.
WAN-IFRA also works with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Zenith for key performance indicators (global revenues and circulation). For audience insights, we work with analytics specialist Chartbeat. World Press Trends is supported by Protecmedia, the content management provider.
Damian Radcliffe, longtime industry analyst, journalist and academic, authored most of the report, offering his analysis and context to the survey and emerging trends. Dr. Francois Nel, also a longtime analyst, well-known academic within our industry and longtime contributor to WPT, provided his analysis, contribution and data analysis of all our collected data. WAN-IFRA’s Andrew Heslop shared his analysis on our Press Freedom data, and WAN-IFRA’s Teemu Henriksson helped to coordinate the project along with Dean Roper.
Here is what makes up the core of the report:
Executive Summary
Methodology and Profile of Respondents
Chapter 1: Global snapshot of performance indicators
Chapter 2: Business Outlook
- Tougher times ahead
- Priming the profit pump
- Relationships with Platforms
- Digital Transformation
Chapter 3: Revenues

Report partner: How AI and automation solutions can impact newsrooms
Chapter 5: Media Freedom
In our current social and political landscape, ‘Fake News’ has dominated the global conversation, but how do we recognize what is mis- and disinformation? And how can we contain it?
In this webinar, we take a closer look at this pressing issue, and how to use technology to mitigate the effects of misinformation and fight distrust.
Communicators need to take a stand on ethical, transparent, and professional communication in a world where “alternative facts” and “fake news” have become commonplace expressions. 2017 saw one of the biggest cases of ethics in PR since the turn of the century – in the form of the Bell Pottinger scandal. The manner in which numerous global crises were handled, such as United Airlines in the US and Ford in South Africa, has highlighted the role of ethical communication and the importance of robust, transparent and timely PR in building, maintaining and enhancing reputational resilience.
The populous and culturally diverse nations of Asia are glued together by shared interests of economic growth and political influence. How is the evolution of Asian markets like China – and why are they special? How do a handful of influential corporate giants offer a new way of thinking on how brands are built and how reputations are managed?

The future smart cities will offer their citizen’s safe, clean, noise-free and efficient public transportation. However, this transformation is not only about technology, but also heavily impacted by politics, collaborations and communications.
The fourth industrial revolution is not about digitalization alone, but about how digital infrastructure changes our industries, our work and our societies. This change is genuinely different: this time it is exponential, polarizing and combinatorial. Our world changes fast, but our understanding is slow. Our new social dynamics and our new communication tools affect politics, finances and relationships through new media and its exponential and polarizing trends. The global power of new monopolies and the algorithms that run their businesses is the core of the new PR.

2018 is the 40th anniversary of Chinese Reform and Opening. It’s been 40 years since China opened itself to the world. In these 40 years, China´s economy have grown rapidly from no. 15 in GDP rank in 1978 to no. 2 in 2017. In these 40 years, so many events have impacted the Chinese society tremendously: in 1987, China established connection into Internet; in 2001, China joined WTO; in 2008. These events are the milestones and driving forces behind development of Chinese society, and what has driven the public's cognition, understanding and response to these events, thereby affecting and changing people's behavior and decision-making? That’s the power of communication.

A power among the emerging countries and also a nation unable to shake off political and economic instability. In the eyes of the world, Brazil oscillates between these two extremes. In a country in which crises have dominated the agenda, ensuring coherent and consistent corporate communication is particularly challenging. Natura, a company which places social and environmental impact on the same level as financial results, faces the additional challenge of communicating the value of sustainable practices as a path towards overcoming crises to its consumers and investors.
What defines a communicative organization - which factors are crucial for the development of an organization where communication creates value? The 3-year research project "Communicative Organizations" based at Lund University in partnership with the Swedish Communication Association, is and was one of the biggest applied research projects in the field of public relations and strategic communication. The main aims with the project is to increase the knowledge about the value of communication for organizations and to deliver new insights about demands and challenges for communication professionals. The empirical data was collected from eleven corporations and public organizations, such as IKEA and the Swedish Police. Differing from earlier research project in the area the empirical focus is not only in communication professionals but on managers in other areas as well as co-workers.
In a world where we are regularly over saturated with content, organisations today must ensure they weave their culture into as much of their internal communication as possible for there to be any chance of effective engagement. Unless employees genuinely believe they belong to a community of co-workers, (including and especially their leaders) who share their values and interests, chances of achieving any sort of engagement cut through will be slim. Effective internal communication must reflect those values and shine a spotlight on and give voice to those co-workers who live them.
In this era of endless content, fake news and a loss of trust, what are the risks facing ethical public relations professionals, and their clients and employers? What are the opportunities? This informative talk will focus on the present and future of technological, trending, and expanding opportunities (and potential complications) within the realm of PR, as well as how industry professionals can make the most of what's around the corner in PR and communications.

Content creation, media relations and planning were cited as the top three skills in public relations by practitioners in the CIPR State of the Profession survey for 2017. Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
