Overview
Introduction
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) was formed on 1st July 1995,
through an Act of Parliament Chapter 469 of the Laws of
Kenya.
It is the sole revenue collecting agency for the government.

Prior to establishment of KRA, various taxes were collected by
separate departments under the Ministry of Finance.
These were:
1. Department of Value Added Tax
2. Department of Income Tax
3. Department of Customs.

Existence of separate entities collecting various taxes led to a
number of challenges such as; high administrative costs,
duplication of efforts /roles and difficulties in enforcement
and audit.
These challenges led to demand for a sufficient tax system,
thus the formation of KRA in 1995.
