dream
Koda Living Community is an
incredible opportunity, not only for
residents and staff, but for all of us
in Steele County. The facility will be
modern, yet feel like a home instead
of an institution.
Residents will have the opportunity
to have their own private rooms.
Meals will be served family style.
Activities will be centered on a
wellness model.
All staff, including directors like
myself, will receive certified nursing
assistant training, enabling Koda
to follow a universal care model.
I am excited to be a part of this
healthcare transition benefiting our
community.
- Sue Hancock, therapeutic
recreational director
With community support, special
enhancements are possible, such
as:
• Installing track lift system
throughout facility for resident
and employee safety.
• Purchasing all new furnishings
for resident rooms (including 42”
beds) and family visiting space.
• Completing the connecting link
between hospital and skilled
facility for use by residents/patients, family
members, employees, and physicians.
• Enlarging the proposed chapel. The chapel will
be welcoming to all faiths.
• Providing additional wellness/therapeutic
equipment for transitional care residents and
outpatient services.

3. Koda, the Dakota Indian word for friend, describes the type of organization that will be
constructed on the campus of Owatonna Hospital and Owatonna Clinic-Mayo Health System.
The 80-bed long term care facility will be friendly, welcoming and easily accessible for all in the
community. It will feature spacious, homelike rooms congregated in neighborhoods. In support
of its campus partners, Koda Living Community will also offer specialized care to help residents
transition from the hospital to home.
Koda Living Community is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization owned by Steele County
Communities for a Lifetime, Inc. (SCCL) SCCL is also a nonprofit partnership of Steele County
and Benedictine Health System, a Minnesota based nonprofit organization which manages the
operations.
Our Mission By working together, our mission is to integrate a continuum of services
with genuine compassionate care for our communities.
Our Vision Building a community for a lifetime where health, respect, independence
and choice are enhanced for all.
Our Core Values
Hospitality We are a welcoming community built on openness, kindness and
compassion.
Stewardship We utilize resources responsibly recognizing the contributions of all.
Respect We honor every person with dignity and reverence by being aware and
celebrating individual needs, choices and beliefs.
Justice We honor diversity in all people and ideas and advocate on their behalf.
Integrity We are proactive, honest and consistent.
Steele County’s commitment to the health
and welfare of its residents began more
than 100 years ago. In 1880, the 12 acre
County Poor Farm was purchased by
Steele County at the price of $3,500.
The farm, which was the forerunner to
Cedarview Care Center, was run like any
other farm in that time period, people
came to live and work for their keep.
Fifteen to 17 people and their families
lived on and operated the farm at any
given time.
In 1915, the county acquired land east
of Cedar Avenue, Owatonna, and built,
in 1919, a red brick building to care for the
county’s elderly. In 1970, the south part of
the present building was built to replace the
aging facility. The east wing was added in
1976. The name, Cedarview Care Center,
evolved as services changed and expanded.
Park Place senior congregate and assisted
living apartments were added in 2001 to
provide a continuum of services.
In 2007, Steele County launched its
Communities for a Lifetime initiative. The
initiative identified that by the year 2011
more than 25% of the population will be
over the age of 55. Not surprising, by 2020,
the County’s population age 75 plus will
rise, creating more demand for health care
services.

dream
Two generations of my family have benefited
from Cedarview’s attentive care. The concern
for individuals’ differing needs is unsurpassed.
Families are kept informed of residents’ progress,
activities fit the residents’ well-being, dietary
needs are met by kitchen staff that varies the
menu, the nurses and aides carefully document
medications and hold regular care conferences
with families, and the social workers act as liaison
between all those involved.
Best of all, the entire Owatonna community
views Koda Living Community as an integral
part of continuing life care. Cedarview has done
Owatonna proud for many years, and Koda will
only enhance its program, its personnel, and its
level of care for all residents in the years to come.

friends
Dear Friends,
Ground has been broken to begin construction on the extension of our
community’s dream for a continuum of care on one campus. Koda
Living Community will be a home for our friends in this community who
need post acute, skilled nursing and rehabilitative care using the latest
innovations and approaches.
Koda Living Community will provide quality care
while meeting the growing demand for services, all
on the campus adjacent to Owatonna Hospital and
Owatonna Mayo Clinic. With 80 beds, Koda Living
Community will offer a homelike environment where
our family, friends and neighbors can receive the care
they need while having the security and comfort of
being near their loved ones.
While much has been accomplished to extend
this dream, your help is needed to do more. With
your support, we can purchase specialized therapy
equipment for the wellness center and new furnishings
for resident rooms and family visiting areas. Other gifts can help install a
track lift system throughout the facility to increase resident and employee
safety.
Our care is based on our Core Values of Hospitality, Stewardship,
Respect, Justice and Integrity. Your generous gift can help Koda Living
Community enhance our services to meet the needs of our growing aging
population and provide area residents with a supportive community to
live and thrive in.
Please join us in extending the dream of providing quality care for those
in need.
Sincerely,
Terry Schneider
Administrator/CEO
To help address the identified health care needs, Steele County sought a partner and joined forces
with the Benedictine Health System (BHS). BHS is a faith-based, values-based health care
system with a unique expertise in long term care. BHS owns and/or manages more than 40 long
term care campuses – assisted living and independent housing, post acute and long term care
facilities – in seven states. Together, Steele County and BHS formed Steele County Communities
for a Lifetime, Inc., with BHS providing management support for Cedarview Care Center and
Park Place.
Steele County Communities for a Lifetime’s ultimate vision is to be a catalyst for change by
bringing together individuals and organizations committed to making our community friendly
to aging in the places we all call home. This vision will be achieved through the development
of programs, facilities and services to support our ability to maintain health, independence and
choice as we get older. Our first goal is to construct a new post acute/long term care facility as
part of a continuum of care on the Owatonna Medical Campus integrating health, long term care
and rehabilitative services supporting our ultimate vision.
Plans have been drafted. Mayo Health System donated the land. And the new facility has a name
which reflects the local community.
While much is in place, more is needed to extend the dream.
